Valentine's Day

Everybody around me has been obsessed with Valentines Day. That's usually not a bother for me. I would just smile and nod, say the appropriate things at the appropriate times and go on. But this year I can;t do it. The girls are so excited about it, asking me what I am going to buy for my girl. When I tell them I don't celebrate it, they are horrified. How could I DO such a thing. Men are so insensitive.

Yeah. That's it. I'm not just a lucky guy with a girl that understands I don't enjoy Valentine's?. Maybe she doesn't enjoy today either?

I got a long lecture from a couple slot attendant's today. Girls of course. How I should be thinking of my girl, and making this day about her. It's a special day for the women doncha know. It's the man's job to make her feel like one in a million today, to honor her, and show my devotion. To give thanks for all that she does for me, and what she puts up with. Because men are difficult. Mmhmm.

I let them rant. Watching them puff up, then relax as they finished venting. I said nothing and turned to go, and one of em asked me. "Aren't you going to say anything?"
I told them... "Everyday I have with her is Valentines. It may not always be good or easy, but I try to honor her as best I can, from where I am. Distance, and day to day bullshit gets in the way sometimes, but she is always my angel. Flowers and chocolates one day a year do not make her special. She does that all on her own. There is no other. Today on the other hand I honor and miss another. I think of the woman that was my mother and father. The woman that forgot more than she will ever be able to teach me. She died today, 3 years ago. This day is hers."

They never asked me who I was talking about. I can only assume they thought it was my Mother. But they were wrong again. It's my grandmother's ghost that's with me today.
