I had quite a collection of pop-up books when I was a kid, they absolutely fascinated me. One book was about maritime explorers and one particular page in it blew my mind every time I looked at it. There was a layered painting--a view from what looked like a very large balcony with people gathered on it all looking at what is supposed to be the arrival of one of the explorer ships (don't remember who it was in this case). The balustrade was all die-cut, so you could see the background scenery through the holes, and since it was about an inch, maybe more, away from the background 'layer,' it looked incredibly dimensional.

books, pop-up books, design, crafts
