I am kind of bouncing on a 'kyaaaaaaaaa~' sort of high now, because I just finished Tokujo Kabachi (and I can finally type that without needing to check the spelling!) and it is all sorts of awesome, and I am so, so in love with the drama.
I didn't expect much of it when it came out, and didn't think I would like it a lot, which is partly why I took so long to get down to it, but once I started, I just simply downed the entire series in 4 days- I couldn't stop. It was so addictive. I adored it completely. And I would love to see more of it, perfectly happy if this was a 20 ep drama, just so I could get more of Tamura Katsuhito.
I loved Sho's character, I think it's been some time (though I've been really busy this year so far and haven't watched much dramas) since I was so enamored with a series and so smitten with a character. Completely infatuated with Tamura. Maybe 'cuz it was almost as though I could see shades of AnS Sho in it? They served up so much Shofail!, but also tempered with droolworthy Sho and Very Capable Sho We Marvel At. At times I was very amused and wondering, is this acting, on his part. It's like they took all the aspects of Sho we love so much and threw them all in the drama. With the complete, wide range of Sho-faces. It's awesome, really. Shofaces.
(And, maybe it's just me, but passionate, enthusiastic idiot who goes at everything with determined drive and crazy hard work and somehow manages to work miracles every time, with plenty of tears and laughter being easily emotionally affected and touched, while infecting everybody's lives? Just sounds like a certain zookeeper to me :D)
And it was utterly delightful at the end of every episode where they had the actors call up audience members who'd won prizes from the show and immediately it was back to MC/newscaster Sho being all professional-like, oh the juxtaposition. And the at times hot-tempered character in the show brings to mind a certain time in the past before someone mellowed and when someone was well-known for his quick, hot temper...Wonderful casting- I suppose they did pretty much write that character for him.
Ohno did a lovely cameo remiscient of Maou. I did a double take and almost missed him because it was 'IS that riida???!!'
Alright, I did sort of really fall in love with Sho, susceptibility to the charms of drama characters. But it got me thinking too that Sho is really good at his own image management. (Or maybe his manager is :P) He's very well-balanced. And it's hard to dislike him, if one is neutral it's easy to drift towards liking him or just having a good impression, he gives you every reason to like him. And I do think he's good. And in all that there's something pretty amazing about him too. (That he was shuttling between filming and flying to and fro from Vancouver...that guy works too damn hard. But still...come cover our Youth Olympics too! I promise not to mistake you for Aiba!)
But, drama, yes I am captivated by the drama. It actually made law so interesting and accessible! (Just like what Rookies did for baseball, come to think of it.) And it was comedy, but more than that it was full of hope and I'm a total sucker for hopeful dramas. And it was full of the elements I love of j-dramas. And it was touching but Sho didn't cry too much and it wasn't trying to wring emotions out of the viewer, (My Girl scriptwriter, I'm staring at you) something I hate but kept a lighter touch. But still touching on deeper, more serious issues and themes at times, and being starkly realistic about certain things. But there's always Tamura's overwhelming idealism and optimisim to soothe, and well it's about selling fantasy, and I'm buying it. (The one place in life I can always find hope: a j-drama. ^__^)
Oh! Speaking of mad love, Music station on Friday was mad love too, Arashi was on crack. And feely. Ohmiya was in their element, and Sho leading Aiba out on his fringe just brought to mind all kinds of images. (Is it just me?? Thinking "Collar, collar!") They are S&M or SM together, aren't they. Now in literal form! Aiba's fringe: providing hours of entertainment all round. (I knew there was something with his seaweed. It brings all the boys to the yard.) Guess Sho couldn't resist playing with it too, after watching Aiba play with it endlessly. This is my head on crack too. Those few seconds made my day for a very long time. How little it takes, how much.
