Sirin checked his hair in the dingy mirror mounted in his bathing nook again. If only his curls would behave today. Sighing, he turned to lean against the sink, admiring his quarters. His desk was neat, though a bit cluttered with equipment, the poster that inspired him to join the service hung above it, while his bed and the rest of the bunk remained unadorned. He had pretty much all of his important possessions out, and the place did actually feel a bit like a home. And if the captain had been at all serious in that message, he’d be living in that sparse bunk for the rest of his “God-forsaken days”. Not that Sirin minded the idea at all. He was just thankful that he didn’t have a bunk-mate.
A heavy knock on the door broke his train of thought. “Yes?” he called, giving his hair one last pass in the mirror “Come in!” The door swung open and Captain Skadi marched in, looking angry about something. Sirin panicked a moment, suddenly aware of how informal that must have been and probably non-protocal. Then again, the Captain wasn’t known for following protocol at all. Standing at attention, Sirin saluted the Captain.
“At ease, Mr. Sirin,” Skadi eyed the young man for a moment before turning to inspect his living quarters. Relaxing as the Captain’s back was turned; Sirin breathed a sigh of relief. Captain Skadi seemed less angry after giving him a once over. Sirin let his eyes flow over the Captain’s body, from the mass of long dark hair down along her spine to her well worn pistol at her hip, along the edge of her belt to the-
“Mr. Sirin!”
Sirin snapped his head up to meet Captain Skadi’s stare, which had returned to its sour demeanor.
“Ah, yes ma’am?”
The Captain’s mouth pulled tight at this. Though he cringed internally at this, he couldn’t help being slightly excited by how close she was suddenly standing. Just under a meter apart!
“I’m here to welcome you to my ship, my home, the Thjassi, in case you couldn’t guess. You’re a part of my crew, my family, now. And as such, there are a few things you should know.”
Skadi punctuated each ‘my’ by jabbing Sirin in the same spot on the chest. Even though they hurt a bit, the fact that she was even touching him was almost too much to handle.
“First off, never call me ‘ma’am’. Sir or Captain will do.” She continued jabbing him with this statement.
“Second, you came highly recommended to me from a dear friend. You best fly my baby right.” Sirin gulped and Skadi continued to jab at his chest. He hoped that there would be a bruise tomorrow, so he knew this wasn’t another dream.
“And finally, if you are going to keep that cardboard cut-out of me, you best not hide her under your bunk when I inspect.” With a final jab, she turned back to his bunk and pulled out a pen. Standing up the cut-out, Skadi began to sign it on the breast. Sirin hoped to God this wasn’t a dream. Too bad he didn’t have his camera out, as the actual battle-worn Captain with the bathing suit edition cutout would be such an amazing addition to his Skadi fan-page. Instead, he weakly replied “Yes, sir.”
Skadi smirked to herself as the young man’s voice cracked.

so! yeah, there it is.
