Writing and books and Nathan, oh my!

Jan 22, 2009 16:35

So, in case you haven't seen it, I got my fic index rebuilt! Woot! And my journal's all tagged up, too. Better late than never, right? *g*

In the process of rebuilding the index, I found 4 old fics that I hadn't linked in my LJ, so I'm gonna do that now, just because I'm anal. *g*

I said in my index entry that I'm hoping to write more this year, if inspiration hits. Well, for anyone seeking inspiration of their own, Porn Battle VII is accepting prompts until Saturday. And comment-fic is a new daily prompt community. I've seen a couple of prompts at both that tickle my muse, if I can just get her to come out and play. Maybe you'll find something, too.

Along with writing goes reading, so I thought I'd mention some of the books I've been reading lately. Unfortunately, most of them have been for book club, and most of them have not been all that enjoyable. Let's see, we've read...

Eat, Pray, Love. Ugh. That woman was so self-centered I couldn't have cared any less about her travels in Italy, India and... Indonesia? All paid for by the magazine she was writing articles for while she took a year off to 'find herself'. Yeah, right, whatever. I left her in Italy.

The Alchemist, meh. It annoyed me that there was no specific time given for the story. Yes, it's supposed to be an allegory, but when a poor shepherd boy can read and buy books, but doesn't know where the pyramids are, it just throws me out of the story.

Twilight Do I even need to go into why I hated this book? Awful writing, Mary Sue author, self-centered heroine, creepy stalker hero, I could go on and on... And, unbelievably, all my friends liked it. *headdesk*

The Autobiography of Santa Claus. This book had so much potential, but when every historical figure Santa met throughout his life accepted his story without one bit of skepticism and then joined him in his gift-giving enterprise? It lost me. If you want me to believe this? Give me a reason to other than 'it's the magic of Santa'. Meh.

And, surprise, surprise, two books I actually liked!

The Other Boleyn Girl I'm a sucker for English history, and loved this book. Unfortunately, I didn't get it finished before our meeting that month, and haven't gone back to it. *sigh* I hope to one day, though. Also? Hated the movie. The costumes were good, but past that? Too many unbelievably modern attitudes, not to mention a gratuitous rape scene that was also unbelievable given the clothing styles of the day, and filming locations that didn't look anything like the area from London to Windsor. *rolls eyes*

Wicked I absolutely devoured! The author did a fantastic job of world-building, fitting his story into what we already know of Oz. And for being written 20 odd years ago, the politics of the storyline still resonate. I liked the book so well that I read the sequel Son of a Witch, which moved along a little slower, but I still enjoyed it. Am now waiting for the third part of the trilogy, A Lion Among Men. Unfortunately, I'm going to skip seeing the play while it's here in town. At $50+ a pop for tickets, I want to be able to sit next to my husband, and the only tickets left are singles. Ah, well, my own fault for waiting. Maybe it's for the best since I enjoyed the book so much. *g*

Seducing Mr. Darcy is a piece of pure fluff we're reading at my recommendation for next month. It involves a modern-day woman traveling through time to do as the title suggests and thereby screw up the plot of Pride and Prejudice. I'm about halfway through it, and while there are things about it that are annoying me, any book that makes me laugh out loud when I'm reading it is worth the read. *g*

Speaking of laughing-out-loud, if you haven't read the last Stephanie Plum Numbers book (I'm still waiting to read the new Between-the-Numbers one), do! I enjoyed it more than I've enjoyed any of them in recent memory.

Before I go, y'all know about Nathan's new show that premieres March 9th, right? It's serendipitous that he's playing a mystery writer, given the topic of this post. ;) If you haven't seen the latest promo, give it a look. I, for one, can't wait. (I was going to link the longer trailer, but it appears to have been removed from YouTube. :( *shakes fist at TPTB*)

Guess that about covers what I was going to talk about this time around, so see ya! *waves*
