So, I was able to rent "Living Til the End" on Tuesday. Tried to buy it, but none of the stores had it in, so Yay! for Hollywood Video! I watched it right away, and then again yesterday morning, and have been trying to formulate what I could say about it without getting spoilery. So, here goes...
First, there are a lot of squee! worthy moments in the film. Sean's hands. Sean's smile. Sean shirtless. (Oh, if only that sheet had dipped *just* a wee bit further down.)
Second, there are some interesting photo--tricks? My favorite ones are shots seen through one character's glasses. Very cool. Lot of fast-paced close-up shots--especially at the beginning. Not being a photographer, I can't really talk intelligently about this, so won't. *g* Suffice it to say, the photgraphy was wonderfully done.
But overall? A very slow-paced movie. And very quiet. I can see why it didn't get wide distribution. It wouldn't have done well in theaters. *shrug* Sean does a fantastic job playing the hesitancy of someone with OCD, but I'd really like to see him in a role that calls for him to be more forceful. We've seen hints of that ability in "Firefly" and the BDM, and maybe a tiny bit in "Dive". I just wish he'd be offered roles that allowed him to stretch, you know? *g*
Two things that drove me up the wall in this movie, though, were...1) his mother called herself 'mommy'. Thank God, he didn't call her that! I really would have had to scream. *g* And 2) these two people, who presumably have never left the country, just hopped on a plane to Europe with just a few days' notice. Hello! Passports take months to obtain! (The same thing happened in "The Holiday"--took me right out of the story.) Come on, Hollywood! Wake up to the facts! It's not like it would have been that hard to have given them an excuse to already have a passport, but when the character says he hasn't flown since before his father died, several years ago, that indicates no passport! Grr! (Sorry, that's a very minor spoiler. Couldn't help myself.)
So, where do I rate this in Sean's movie list? Well, I definitely don't hate it as much as "Dive". *eg* But, nor do I like it as well as "Wedding Wars". And, I think "Brian's Song" would have to come ahead of it, as well. After all, iirc, he got to 'stretch' in that one. I'd have to watch it again to be sure, and that ain't gonna happen. Hits too close to home. And, of course, the BDM is in a class all by itself. *g*
There you have it. My thoughts, such as they are, on the much anticipated LttE. I'm glad I saw it, but also glad I didn't end up buying it, because I don't know how often I'd rewatch it. *shrug*
