Kyungsoo has dashed out of his own classroom and into Jongin’s to go drop off a couple of snacks and say hi. Time between classes and lunch time are clearly Kyungsoo’s favorite times in school because they involve Jonginjonginjongin and anybody could tell that he’s a bit enamored with the tennis champion of the school.
But when Kyungsoo shuffles through the door, he frowns a bit but happily greets a couple of Jongin’s classmates who recognize him. They all give a small wave and beam back (because who wouldn’t be able to resist smiling back at Kyungsoo’s adorable curved lips?) when Kyungsoo returns their greetings and moves to stand next to Jongin’s empty desk.
He’s a bit lost in thought, thinking about what to make for dinner since his parents are having hard times at work when long arms come to wrap themselves quickly around his waist. Because of the height difference, Kyungsoo squawks and ends up a couple of inches off the ground before landing back on the classroom floor. “Hi Soo,” he hears whispered in his ear before being given the chance to turn around and smack the younger boy in the shoulder.
Jongin rubs his shoulder in fake pain and pouts before smiling and Kyungsoo shakes his head before depositing the snacks onto his desk. “Mission ‘surprise Kyungsoo’ complete!” Jongin exclaims and laughs loudly when Kyungsoo spins back around with squinted eyes. “Yeah, and also making me lose five years of my life. Thanks,” he drawls out and glares before relaxing and grinning back at Jongin.
And anybody looking at the two could tell that they were special to each other, but one more in love than the other.

Jongin notices that the year Kyungsoo graduates, something has happened.
He doesn’t know what nor how, but Kyungsoo is noticeably less bubblier. He’s developed a great sense of sass (Sehun calling him the local sassafrass) but also has started singing mellower, calmer songs at the small cafe he works at. Some of the frequent listeners also comment on Kyungsoo’s recent choice of repertoire to Jongin, but cannot deny that Kyungsoo’s voice is still just as beautiful as it was before singing upbeat songs, maybe deeper than before.
Jongin wants to call him out on it so bad, but the last time he said anything about it, Kyungsoo had given him a small smile and asked him about his last tennis match, to which Jongin hesitantly launched into great discussion about it and soon forgot about why Kyungsoo had changed.
Kyungsoo knew that Jongin wasn’t blind--he could tell that he was different than before. With him graduating this year, Kyungsoo realized how unattainable Jongin was. He was affectionate, but Kyungsoo had always assumed it was because they were close friends. He never expects Jongin to reciprocate his one-sided feelings.
With the one year gap between them, it’ll give Kyungsoo time to re-situate himself. There will be no Jongin. There will be new people, new faces, a new environment, and new goals. No more rushing to another classroom to deliver snacks and see a beautiful smile. No more sitting out on the benches with a book and occasionally watching Jongin train on the tennis courts.
No more Jongin.
Maybe this is what he needs--an opening to something new.
Kyungsoo graduates with a genuine smile on his face. It’s the first he’s had in a while since the year started--but now his mother is dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief and his father looks proud. Jongin looks the proudest though, standing there with his hands stuffed in his slacks’ pockets and a silly grin on his face. “I’m proud of you,” Jongin half-screams in his ears so Kyungsoo can hear him over the sonorous mull of the crowd. Kyungsoo gives him an eye-smile and mouths a “thank you” to him. It means a lot to Kyungsoo that Jongin showed up, and Kyungsoo’s classmates are unsurprised at tan boy’s appearance.
Kyungsoo spends the summer hanging out with Jongin and packing up for college. Jongin whines and whines and whines about how Kyungsoo won’t be able to bring snacks for him anymore and Kyungsoo sounds genuinely offended for being viewed as nothing but a food bank. But that automatically makes Jongin grovel on his knees and apologize and spill about how much he loves Kyungsoo and that he’ll miss him.
One night, Kyungsoo leaves the house and visits the school. Nobody is here, and nothing is stopping him from reaching the roof of the building.
The summer night is somewhat cold for July, and Kyungsoo hangs onto his biceps for some sense of warmth. While watching the sunset, it hits Kyungsoo that the end is coming. It’s coming a little too soon and while it hits him with full force in the chest and he stumbles back and fights for a breath of air--
Kyungsoo snaps his eyes open and is greeted with darkness. There’s a warm heat next to him, a familiar one at most and Kyungsoo’s mind registers that Jongin is next to him. At the realization, he exhales shakily and quietly, eyes blinking rapidly before worming himself under Jongin’s bent arm and breathing onto Jongin’s neck.
Jongin feels the shift of movement in the bed and arm and moves his limb to wrap around his boyfriend’s waist on instinct. He smells Kyungsoo’s sweet shampoo and subconsciously smiles at being able to be blessed with such a sense.
“Bad dream?” He murmurs into Kyungsoo’s hair and a hum is given in return. “Not really, but you know how vividly I dream whenever I do.”
“I’m aware,” Jongin chuckles and kisses the top of his head. “What was it this time?”
“Remember when you were a first year and I was a second year and you scared me by backhugging me?”
“...yeah.”
“And that one time you caught me almost tripping on the roof of the school the summer I graduated?”
“Scared the living shit out of me, but yes.”
“It was just that time span. I felt like I was reliving it again, that same acceptance that you didn’t like me back.”
Jongin uses the hand that’s not around his boyfriend’s waist to tilt up his chin and kisses him sweetly, exhaling when Kyungsoo returns it ounce for ounce. They spend a good five or ten minutes languidly sucking at each other’s lips and dancing with their tongues. Jongin moves to Kyungsoo’s pale neck and places light and succulent kisses on it, causing Kyungsoo to angle his head back a bit for access and breathes heavily because this is Jongin.
He never fails to leave him breathless, no matter what he does, and Kyungsoo loves it. He loves it with his entire being, his entire soul. And it is the exact same for Jongin. “You are so beautiful,” he mouths onto Kyungsoo’s neck and Kyungsoo takes a sharp breath, fingers curling into the ends of Jongin’s bed hair and pulling on it slightly, causing him to groan and roll to hover over Kyungsoo, leaning on his elbows planted next to Kyungsoo’s head.
“How did I get so lucky?” Jongin murmurs, a finger tracing the shape of Kyungsoo’s slightly swollen lips. And as Kyungsoo tugs him down by his neck to kiss him again, he thinks:
I should be asking that.
“Happy birthday, hyung.”
“Thank you.”
“I love you so much. Do you know that?”
“Yeah,” Kyungsoo smiles with a couple of tears in his eyes. “Yeah, I do. And I love you more.”
“Lies,” Jongin accuses and nips at his collarbone in retribution.
“Doesn’t change the fact that I love you.”
