Hechima/Loofah [Public]
As those who follow my Twitter know, I'm currently attempting to make marmalade from the mikan in our yard. The recipe I'm following requires a lot of simmering and I've been working on this all day. I also need to babysit it, so I've moved my laptop to the kitchen counter.
And since I'm here, I figured I'd post about another thing that has been growing in the yard. Hechima! Loofah! (It took me forever to figure out that the plant is called loofah since I tend to neglect looking for an English name if I know the Japanese one.)
My dad had been wanting a vine plant and my mom received a hechima seedling sometime back in...June? It grew and grew. And my dad made a place for it to climb.
In late July, we saw buds.
And flowers.
And while I was in Japan for most of August, we had a number of hechima growing.
By October, we had LOADS of them hanging around.
Some of them quite huge...
In mid-October, my dad picked a few of the lighter ones and they peeled really easily.
Seeds!
After pulling out the seeds and leaving it out in the sun for a day, voila! Loofah!
I appropriated one for myself and have been using it in the shower everyday.
MY GOD. My skin is all soft and smooth now. My mom appropriated a second one for herself, especially since I had been raving about it, and she's a believer now too. It's amazing. Our friends came over about three days after I started using it and they freaked out when they felt my skin. It's THAT good. Probably not that hot for people with extra sensitive skin, but wow. I can't live without the thing now. No sponge I have ever used can compare. Seriously.
We're waiting for the next ones to be ready to peel and so we can start giving them out to people. Oh yeah, Ladies of the Awesomesauce, you don't have a choice, you're getting a few sent your way. (^_^)v
