Adventures in Bento Making

So... thanks to my friend logovo, I started looking at Bento blogs. And I have to admit, getting hunger pangs every time I saw one of those cute little boxes. And after a lot of reading, and thinking, and re-reading, I decided to break out the kitchen appliances, and try again. I stopped cooking because, even if Sam is living with me right now, he sort of never eats at home so... lots and lots of leftovers are not really a good idea.

And after a lot of practice, here's my very first bento, with the help of recipies and tips from Just bento

The bento itself is not a recipe from the site, just a mix and match. I was going to carry this for a convention yesterday, but I couldn't go at the last minute, so I just made it for eating at home :) And I 'm so glad I did.

The main part is just white plain rice to which I added a bit of sake (After an incident with too much salt. Long story). Then I put some bleached spinachs for the base, and my very own experiment for the meat (Originally it was going to be Gyuudon, without the noodles, but there was a mix up with the times, so I ended up improvising). Basically I just put on a hot pan a little bit of oil, two teaspoons of brown sugar, two teaspoons of soy sauce, one teaspoon of mirin, mixed it until the sugar was caramelized, then cut my steak into strips, and fried them all togheter. It made for a very sweet meat that contrasted wonderfully with the salty rice.

The 'eyebrows' of the face are just toasted sesame seeds, and then I added two slices of tea eggs (I only added two sticks of cinnammon to that recipe, it tastes a bit sweeter) to finish it off. It all fit on a 480 lock and lock tupper, and it was all ready to go :)

sparklyflist? I called this bento Kevin. It has the same scary eyebrows if you agree that it sorta looks like a face...

I also made a very yummy miso soup with potatoes and wakame seaweed, because if there's something I love from Japanese food (Besides sushi, that is) is miso soup. Making my own was a great experience!
