Archie's restocking books in the Young Adult section on a Friday afternoon, and the store is kind of dead, but even though there are no customers coming through, someone's got to do it, and it's not like Archie's got much else to keep him busy. He's thinking of what he's going to do that weekend-- maybe visit his sister or something-- when a customer taps him on the shoulder.
It's Andy, and Archie's completely unprepared.
"Hi!" Archie says, and then he realizes that maybe that was too enthusiastic? So he tries again and says, "I mean, hi, ha ha," and that's probably even worse, but Andy just smiles and so Archie tries not to freak out.
"Hey, Archie," Andy says. "Reshelving?" He picks up a Hunger Games book, reads the back.
"Yeah, we're, um," Archie says. "Making a display? Because the movie's coming out, so. Ha ha."
"Yeah, I saw the preview," Andy says. "Neal says it's just Battle Royale Lite, or something." And Archie doesn't know what Battle Royale is about, but he's seen the kinds of books that Neal buys, and he's seen the kind of tattoos that Neal has, and he figures that he doesn't want to know. Not that he's judging Neal! Or stereotyping, or whatever! Archie just, you know. He's not like Neal.
Of course, Archie can't say any of that, because Neal is one of Andy's best friends, but he can't really comment on Battle Royale either? Because he doesn't really know what it is? So instead he just says, "What are you doing here?" And then realizing that sounds kind of rude, he adds, "Not that you can't be here! Just that you don't usually work Fridays. Or maybe you do, and you just only come here on Mondays and Wednesdays, and um. Not that I noticed or anything! Ha ha."
And at that, Archie wants the ground to split open and swallow him whole, because there's no way he stands a chance at all with Andy after that. Not that he, um. Stood much of a chance before? Because Andy is Andy, and he's Archie, just Archie.
But then Andy-- Andy laughs.
"No," he says. "No, no, I'm not working today, but uh." He runs a hand through his hair and glances at the floor, the shelves, and Archie realizes that Andy's nervous and it doesn't even make any sense. "My band has a show tonight, and if you're not busy, maybe you could stop by."
"I'm never busy," Archie says, and that should be the worst possible thing to say in any situation, especially since it's true, but Andy just smile so wide that Archie finds himself smiling back, saying, "Yeah, ha ha."
"Alright, awesome," Andy says, and then he holds up his own phone, waves it in the air as he says, "I'll text you."
And then-- and Archie can barely believe this-- Andy leans in and kisses Archie on the cheek. He leaves just afterwards, walking backwards into a bookshelf as he waves at Archie, and Archie, um. Kind of can't believe any of that just happened? But he can still feel Andy's lips on his cheek, and he knows he's blushing beet red even though there was no one around to see any of it, and he, um. Kind of really had wanted Andy to kiss him, for like weeks now. It all feels like a promise, Archie thinks, the kiss and the concert and all that. Not that he's familiar with those things or anything, but. Archie likes promises.
He moves over to the fiction section to look for Battle Royale, and even though the back of the book is, um. Really terrifying? Archie kind of smiles really wide the whole time he's reading it.
