firstly, i have some GORGEOUS new yarns that will be listed to-morrow around dinnertime on both luxefibre.com and on luxe.etsy.com. want a little taste? well, okay...

we got the tivo adapter which i was a bit miffed about, but i was scared to get a different one and it doesn't work, even though it is cheaper. anyway, we still couldn't get it to work, we messed around with settings that i had changed before and after a couple of hours (and 40 minutes on hold with tivo) it connected. i think that somehow the netgear router changed its password (we never set one, but there is one and we have no clue what it is or how to change it) and i wonder if it is causing us to not be able to update due to security. someone else on the tivo forums had the same problem. anyway, it took forever to update and we are not sure what actually made it update, hopefully the problem is fixed though. i am not even sure if we need the tivo connector or if we can take it back...any clue? with the adaptor it did the exact same thing as it did before.
thanks so much for your help. i didn't have any programming for a couple of days and kept messing with it and got madder and madder and i hope i didn't offend you. i love my tivo and it really upset me to think that they had tried to push us into buying something...anyway! thanks again, n.
No offense, I understand it is frustrating. I'm a complete geek, so I'm used to dealing with these things. (I'm the Director of IT at work.)
You can try your old adapter and see if it works, and if it does, you don't need the TiVo adapter. But, since you have it, you could always keep it since it performs better for TiVoToGo and you know they're not going to break support for it. Then use the old adapter for something else, or eBay it or something.
hey again, we plugged it in and had to force it to connect. it tells us that there is no internet connection. after i force it several times it will connect. i had to force it again yesterday. it does go through, but i need to force it every day it seems...
It does sound like something is wrong with the network configuration.
You might want to check your router and see if you have WEP or WPA/WPA2 on. (Note that only the TiVo adapter works with WPA/WPA2 - all others only handle WEP.) If you're using WEP, get the WEP key off the router in HEX and enter it on the TiVo. WPA/WPA2 should have a long passphrase. (WPA is the best protection for WiFi.)
I had a router go bad on me, and it did similar things - I'd lose network connectivity and have to power-cycle the router to get it working correctly again. It'd work for a while, then flake out again. Eventually I just replaced the router and my network has been fine since. I had a Netgear - WGT624 I think, now I have a Linksys WRT54GL which I loaded with 3rd party software - HyperERT+Thibor.
the thing that is odd though is that our wireless internet is totally fine. no problems at any point...i tried to get in to the router info before and there are passwords and user names on it even though i never set any up, so i am not really sure what to do...
i never thought of that! i don't even care, i just don't want it to screw up my stuff. i tried to log onto my router's page online when all of the drama was happening and it wouldn't load. it just sat there. my friend's hubby is an IT guy, too and was baffled. we don't know passwords or anything and i can't log on to look at it (i wouldn't know what to do, but he would talk me thru it i imagine) so i don't know what i can do. when i go to change settings, it does acknowledge a few other things that aren't ours, but they all have passwords on them, so i guess someone else could use ours the same way. i guess that is why you are supposed to have passwords and usernames, eh? dur. i am an IT guys worst nightmare i imagine. but i am learning. you are really nice to offer your words of wisdom.
You should be able to get into your own router - they usually have a default login - like 'admin', and generally have a blank password out of the box. If you can't get in, someone else may have gotten in and locked you out of your own router. There may be some way to reset it - sometimes there is a hardware reset button, etc. Check the docs or the vendor's website.
You should set an admin password, even if you don't use encryption on the network, just in case.
the funny thing is, on the tivo setting page, it shows like 5 different networks (only one is ours) all the other ones have usernames, etc, so it would make sense that ours is the only non-secure one and someone is using it. if it didn't frakk up my tivo i wouldn't care. are there security issues i should worry about for the computer? i am a total nudnik when it comes to that stuff. we have a mac, btw. and a wireless connection on the laptop. thanks again. you are so smart. hey, i am good at art. that's something, right?
Heh, everyone has their own talents - I'm a geek. :-)
It does mean other people can get on your network and potentially sniff all the traffic going to/from your PC/Mac. That could allow snoops to grab passwords to any websites, etc, that aren't SSL protected.
