what are you waiting for

outside on the porch smoking
i noticed a butterfly flittering and fluttering around
it's not out of the ordinary
we have a butterfly bush after all
then i noticed another one
dead
on its back
legs upside down in the air
the fluttering one kept landing next to the not so fluttering one
i told steve maybe he was trying to save his friend
there was no movement
he batted his wings and went from one side of his dead buddy to the other
sometimes landing an inch or two away
sometimes landing on him, perhaps pleading with his friend to get up
i think the flutterer got sad and flew away
i got sad

and then
and then
the dead butterfly got up
paused for a minute
looked at me
and then flew away
