Norrington, at the Dauntless' rail, gazed across the dark Atlantic waters. In the distance, flickering fireflies of flame lit the night sky, followed by the faint boom of cannonfire.
"What pretty fireworks!"
"Not fireworks, Miss Swann. A battle, it seems."
"Oh! Oughtn't we to help?"
"No. We're racing against hurricane season; delay would be imprudent. Besides, our aim is to deliver you and your father safely to Port Royal, not embroil ourselves in conflicts which do not concern us." He smiled down at her. "Not while we're transporting such precious cargo."
James found the child's shy return smile unexpectedly heart-warming.
