Title: "Pirate Queen" Author:luvvycat Characters: Jack Sparrow, The Black Pearl Rating: G potc100 Prompt: Sail Word count: 100 Disclaimer: PotC is Disney's, not mine. *sniff*
Absolutely beautiful. It was great to read a drabble of yours again. What a fantastic moment in the movie. Even before we're told, we get that vibe that ship means something to Jack and then, boy do we find out just how much. It's fascinating how we first know the Pearl as the ship of the villains and it being this supernatural, deadly force and then as the series goes on, it's like home base, the most familiar setting and the one we're most comfortable seeing.
"Clad in patches like a lowly strumpet..."--Well, goes to show that there is a difference in how Jack and Barbossa treat a lady!
"...to replace her tattered sails with the best he could buy, beg, borrow, or steal."--While my money is on the last one, I love this addition, the glimpse of devotion and also desperation Jack feels and just why he accepts Will's offer and teams up with him and the lengths he will go to in order to get revenge and get the Pearl back for himself. It was so disheartening in DMC that we learned early on it was going to be taken away from him again.
Go into raptures? Oh, Jack. Yes, we do like pretty dresses, but sometimes they aren't the most practical gift. They often lead to passing out and plunging into certain doom...
Believe me, it's great to be able to write again! On top of it being the anniversary month of my dad's passing, we lost two of our pet cats to cancer in February, so the resulting depression just totally took the wind out of my sails, writing-wise. I've gotten next to nothing done on the fanfic front over the past two months! :-(

Indeed, Jack's devotion to the Black Pearl has become such an important part of the PotC universe, the constant, unbreakable thread that runs through all four films. It goes beyond mere possessiveness ... he absolutely NEEDS her to be complete.

I think comparing the way Jack and Barbossa treat Elizabeth in CotBP sort of parallels these differences as well. Barbossa is more prone to, ultimately, resort to brutality to get what he wants, while Jack's method of persuasion leans more toward finesse and seduction. That contrast is reflected in each man's attitude toward the Pearl as well: Barbossa wants to take her, possess her, master her, force her to do his bidding, while Jack seems to truly love his ship, reveres her even, has an almost spiritual bond with her that transcends the usual relationship between captain and ship. It's one of Jack's most redeeming (and endearing!) characteristics, IMO.

LOL! Yes, why pay good money for something you can get for free? (Pirate!) ;-)

In his eyes, the Pearl has been cruelly used by Barbossa. I've always felt that Jack's desire for revenge has less to do with the mutiny and his own marooning than it does about his beloved ship being taken away from him...
It was so disheartening in DMC that we learned early on it was going to be taken away from him again.
Absolutely! He'd just fought for ten years to get her back from Barbossa, only to end up losing her to Davy Jones. And it really makes us recognise how much it cost him, at the end of DMC, when he states she's "only a ship" because we KNOW that the Pearl means much, much more to him than that.
Go into raptures? Oh, Jack. Yes, we do like pretty dresses, but sometimes they aren't the most practical gift. They often lead to passing out and plunging into certain doom...
LOL! Yes, Elizabeth surely found that out. One just has to be careful, if you're getting a dress for a lady, to get it in the correct size, and not a size or two too small! :-)
And that "plunging into certain doom" DID lead to her meeting a handsome and sexy pirate captain, so, in the end, it may have been worth it after all! ;-D
As ever, thank you so much for your comments and insights! Always a pleasure to hear from you! :-)
