I can't help but get the feeling that the Swanns were the only family James had ever really known

Absolutely! They might have served as a sort of surrogate family to James, given the long separation from his own family dictated by his naval career and his post in the faraway Caribbean (or perhaps, as reserved as the Norringtons seem to be, he never really was that close to his own family). Swann certainly seemed eager enough to accept him as a prospective son-in-law, and looked forward to officially making him part of the family!

I love this already, him coming home and a party in full swing. It paints a fun, domestic picture of merriment.

I would guess that the Governor's holiday ball was the event of the year in Port Royal, and how fortuitous it was that James' return from business abroad coincided with the celebration! Quite a welcome-home party for him! :-)

"...holiday candlelight gently kissed a delicately-curved cheek" is such a unique description of Elizabeth and certainly the most vivid in the sentence.

Thank you! I think it shows a bit of James' romantic side coming out, to see her so through his eyes (even if he didn't know exactly who the beautiful stranger was, yet). ;-)

Any time Norrington's feathers get ruffled is rewarding, so for him to realize this is Elizabeth is just fantastic.

It's always nice to see that cool composure slip, if even for a moment. And he WOULD be utterly gobsmacked to discover the lovely woman who'd caught his eye, and the freckle-faced young girl he remembered were one and the same!

And so begins the, I'm guessing, long, awkward courtship that resulted in that unintentionally wacky marriage proposal in COTBP.

Being so accustomed to being in control, I'm sure James would have felt completely out of his element, to be cast in the role of suitor to Elizabeth. I think "long, awkward" would perfectly describe James' mode of courtship. ;-)

Thank you, as always, for responding to my drabbles, and for your lovely and insightful comments! :-)
