LOL!!! Yes, Jack's well and truly squiffed here, isn't he? Three sheets to the wind (but still with a rock-steady sword-hand, and wit enough to save two kids from danger!)
Admittedly, it HAS been a bit tricky, writing them meeting Jack, and yet making it so they don't recognise him (and he, them) when he pops up later in their lives. One could understand him not "remembering" and recognising them, since children never look the same once they grow up (and the aforementioned squiffiness). But Jack's such a striking and memorable person, it's a stretch to contrive circumstances where they would not remember and make the connection later. Hence, the beating he's taken, so they're seeing a distorted appearance, and not really his true, intact face. And this younger Jack, as I present him here, has not yet assumed some of the most distinguishing physical characteristics that would later become Jack Sparrow's "calling cards": i.e., the elflocks, the gold teeth, the kohl around the eyes, etc.
But, to be fair, he does have his beloved hat, and the bucket-boots! ;-)
Thanks so much for "staying onboard" with the story! (And, BTW - Happy New Year!!!) :-)
