MDR

William had a really bad day yesterday. A girl called him gay and he exploded and in order to get away from her told her he was going to kill her. He learned in elementary school that school officials will immediately remove you from whatever you don't want to do or whoever you don't want to be around if you make a threat.

Well, now they want an Manifestation Determination meeting. I am going in this morning to speak with the principal and make a few things known.

1. Under IDEA 2007 the purpose of an MDR is for the parent to prove their child's behavior is directly linked to the disability. We have psychiatrist and psychologist documentation on this.
2. An MDR is a meeting of the IEP team. That means if you must accomodate the parent and have the meeting at a time when they can attend. Therefore if you typically only do them between 9 and 2 on weekdays and the parent cannot meet then you must accomodate them. I cannot afford to take a personal day of leave and loose money. My students cannot afford to miss their teacher.
3. I want to make it known that I requested and IEP meeting during pre-planning to give William's teachers a heads up on him and was told by the lead special education teacher that she did not think it was appropriate because they aren't required to be at school until 8:00 and 7:00 is too early. During such a meeting we could have discussed and formed a more specific plan.
4. I also want to know if William has been given his safe pass. If not, this whole situation could have been avoided had he had that pass and been able to remove himself from the situation instead of forcing a removal by using actions he knew would get the response he wanted.
