Transit Motel, Utah
Dean was starting to get sleepy, that's how long they were waiting for something to happen. Sammy was already asleep. Dean wasn't about to place down the watch, however. He knew what he had felt, even if he had no real idea of what the heck he had felt. He'd never felt something before, not like that. Sure, sometimes, during a Hunt with Dad, he would get a particular feeling against a certain plan they were taking. In the two years that Dean had been helping his father, it wasn't until recently that John had started to listen to him. Other Hunters had long ago started to see Dean as their good luck charm.
In fact, that was his code name. Charm, Charmer, Prince Charming. Mostly, Dean rolled his eyes at the names, but all the guys had one. Dad was Duke or Stitch, after his brief array with field first aid, but behind his back, the guys sometimes called him Grumpy. Dad kind of shrugged it off. He had not so pleasant names for the lot of them too. Bobby Singer was Junker, Cole Jefferson was Bronze after some old medal of his father's that he had carried around a lot during his time overseas, James Murphy was appropriately called Preacher. Jacob Jefferson was JJ and Cole's older brother, Caleb Duncan was Bull after his immense size. And there were others. Some that hadn't lived through the War, so Dean never met them, some that had left the 'lifestyle' so Dean never met them and then there was Thomas. Thomas Kelly Winchester was a Winchester brother that was little heard from, John Winchester's brother.
Dean loved having a code name. It made him one of the guys, almost a full Hunter. Now, only Sammy was called as John's kid or Duke's boy. Granted, he was now Duke's boy Prince Charming, or John's boy the Charmer, or variants on that basis. But Sammy was John's little boy and things like that. But really, everyone called Sammy Tiger. It beat his previous nickname of Pooh Bear or Honey Bear by a long shot. Though, some guys still used it on the kid every now and then, mostly to the ten year old's chagrin.
Dean blinked back some sleep again. Besides him, Sammy started to shift.
"Sam," he groaned. "Knock it off."
Sam started to thrash a bit. And he started to whimper.
Dean's eyes flew open.
"Sammy?" Dean nudged his brother's shoulder. "Hey! Sammy! Yo! Wake up! Shit shit shit. Sam!"
Dean started freaking out. Crap, what if whatever was after them was in his brother? They had re-salted the windows. The had checked the sigils that their father had carved into the wood. Nothing was out of place. Nothing should be able to get into his kid brother.
"Sammy! Wake up, man! Sam!"
"Get out of me," he brother started to mumble. Sam's forehead started to sweat and his thrashing was more controlled. "Get. Out.-
"Sammy? Jesus Christ! Sam! Come on, talk to me, what's going on? Sammy?!"
"Of. MEEE!"
Sam's eyes flew open and he gasped at air. Dean pulled his brother against his chest, rubbing his brother's chest trying to calm the boy.
"Easy, kiddo. Breathe, Sammy." Sam gripped at his arms, slowly gaining control of his air intake again. "Good, good. You okay, little brother?"
Sammy nodded, but he didn't move from against Dean.
"What happened?" Dean asked, still rubbing the younger's chest. He could still feel it beating frantically, and was sure his own was mirroring the frantic rhythm against Sam's back.
Sam shook his head. "Don't know."
"You were saying to-
"There was someone in my head," Sam whispered.
He frowned.
"What?"
"There was someone in my head, Dean! Dean!"
"Shhhh, it's gonna be okay. Nothing's gonna get you."
"How'd it get in my head?" Sam was starting to cry now. Dean didn't need to see it to know. Heck, he felt like crying some himself. "He was talking, in my head! And I didn't waant hiiim there. I d don't w want him tt there!"
Dean tightened his arms around his brother. Jesus, but they were screwed.
Midair, Mid Continent, X-Jet
Charles Xavier groaned. Then he gasped in pain and would have tumbled out of his seat if it wasn't strapped in at the moment.
"Professor!" Many voices called out.
"Incredible," he said, even as he groaned in pain. He opened his eyes, not realizing that they were closed even as he did so.
"What was it?" Jean asked, frowning from besides him.
She had likely felt the strain this time too.
"That boy, he is very powerful. I think, I think he sensed me."
"In his mind?" Wolverine frowned.
"Yes, I do believe so. I must have tapped into him somehow."
"Even at this distance, Professor? Is that safe?" Cyclops wondered.
"Apparently not. The boy did not want me in his mind. And he forced me out. I saw, nothing. I couldn't read him."
No one said anything else. But he didn't have to be a psychic to know what they were thinking, or telepathic in his case. They would be thinking the same thing that was running through his own mind. No one else was powerful enough to block Charles Xavier from their mind. Even Magneto, his old friend, had had to device his helmet to keep his mind to himself. It wasn't as if Charles made a habit to get into people's mind, but it had never been denied him. Even the fragments in Wolverine's mind had been open to him.
Is this a smart idea, Professor?
He glanced over to Jean Grey. The girl could see the worry on his face as easily as he could see it on hers.
He thought for a moment over his answer. Was it smart to go up to an unknown Mutant, whose powers were uncharted and unknown, and try to steer his path towards good (and hopefully the Mansion). Was it smart to take the children along, even if they were older than the little ones and the boy himself, when they could potentially be harmed as well?
What he did know was that it was not safe to do nothing.
It's the smartest idea I have at the moment, dear. I just hope it won't be fruitless.
