Chapter Eight:

Callie set her alarm so that she could wake Arizona up in time to get to the harbor for a four hour charter. When she walked in to the room where Arizona was sleeping, she stood by the bed quietly and just watched. Arizona’s face was still red from being hit, but it was also going through a series of contortions with what must be a horrible dream. Callie could see the twisted pain of her past and truly felt sorry for her. She didn’t want to startle her but, she needed to wake her up. She reached down and touched her shoulder "Arizona?" Arizona jerked up with a look of fear on her face, almost as if she didn’t know where she was. "Hey it’s okay....it’s just me."

Arizona slowed her breathing down, but then the fact that she was up and her eyes were open led her to the acute awareness of being hung over. "Oh my God.....what time is it?" she groaned.

"It’s six o’clock....you said you needed to be up by six." Callie explained.

Arizona put her head back down "Can you give me thirty more minutes?.......and make this damn room stop spinning?"

Callie chuckled in full understanding of how Arizona was feeling right about now. What she couldn’t figure, was how Arizona was going to manage a fishing trip with the waves and the smell of the bait. I guess it being only four hours is a small blessing. "Yeah....I’ll go make some coffee."

Callie returned thirty minutes later with a steaming cup in her hand "Okay....time to get up. Here’s some coffee." Arizona simply moaned some more and Callie set the cup down. "I’ll check on you in ten." Callie then left to get dressed. When she came back, Arizona was sitting on the edge of the bed with coffee cup in hand, but her eyes were still closed. "Are you going to be able to do this?"

"I have to....I don’t have a choice. I’m going to have to pay to get more materials and to get my equipment fixed.......fishing charters are the only way to make that happen.......that is if Harry doesn’t get me thrown off the project." Arizona let out a long sigh.

Callie came to sit beside her on the bed and put an arm around Arizona’s shoulders "It’s going to be okay.....and we’ll see this through together......starting with today."

Arizona looked up at Callie not understanding "What do you mean.....today?"

"I’m going with you.....out on the boat. I can do the bait.....maybe, and get drinks and things....you’ll just have to drive.......oh....and clean the fish.....ew" Callie said with a smile.

"No Calliope........your just getting over the last time you were out there.....I’m not letting you go.......you don’t have to do this" Arizona didn’t want Callie to bail her out of this. It was her mess and she would have to deal with it.

Callie’s hand took Arizona’s chin and lifted it toward her "I told you that I would be here and I want to be here for you" she caught Arizona’s eyes with her own. "Let me help you. That last trip was a fluke....this one will be a piece of cake."

Once again Arizona had to fight to keep the tears at bay. She had no idea why Callie cared about her, but it was obvious that she did. Arizona felt horrible and having an extra hand would be nice....especially if it was Callie’s. "Okay" she said softly.

***********

After a very quick shower, Arizona and Callie stepped out of the house. Arizona ran in to her own to get some clean clothes. On the way back down the stairs, she was met by Gertie who was holding a small cooler, the sad look of disappointment evident all over her face. Arizona dropped her eyes, took the cooler and walked toward the door, but stopped and set it down. She turned back and walked to her Aunt, hugging her tightly "I’m sorry Aunt Gert.....I know I’m a disappointment to you, but I’ll try to do better."

"You are not a disappointment, but your actions are distressing. I love you Arizona....almost as if you were my own, and I don’t want to see you throw the rest of your life away......it’s time to....." Gertie’s speech was cut off.

"Aunt Gert......I know where this is going.....and I love you too, but right now.....I’ve got to get to the harbor......I promise you can lecture me later." Arizona was backing out the door as she spoke.

Gertie watched as Arizona and Callie got into the pickup truck. "Arizona was late if she was driving to the harbor" Gertie thought to herself and she smirked at the fact that Callie was going with her.

***********

On the boat, Callie turned out to be a great help. Arizona was moving slowly as she was still a bit unsteady....and green. The cooler Gertie packed had enough food for both of them. The biscuits helped absorb what alcohol was left in Arizona’s gut and the bottled water was helping to get her re hydrated. She still felt like shit, but less so. There were two groups going out with them, one a family, two adults and a ten year old, and the other was three college aged guys. As the set off out of the sound, both Callie and Arizona sat quietly thinking to themselves. Callie rummaged through her bag......this time she was better prepared. She a rain slicker and rubber boots, a baseball cap and her camera......so she could take pictures of the island from the water’s advantage. At about ten miles out, Arizona directed Callie in how to get the guests set up. Arizona herself did the talking about safety and all while Callie took the bait out and cut it up. It smelled disgusting and she figured Arizona would definitely puke if she had to do it.

As the hours progressed, Callie caught Arizona napping at the wheel so to speak, and had to rouse her on occasion. At other times, Arizona watched as Callie interacted with the two groups. She was especially good with the ten year old. The sun had gotten very hot and Callie had stripped her t shirt and was wearing a red bikini top and her baseball cap to keep the sun out of her eyes. Arizona couldn’t help but stare at her.....the Latina was absolutely stunning. She found Callie’s camera in her bag and took a few pictures.....for souvenirs from the trip she rationalized, although she knew that wasn’t true. Unfortunately, she wasn’t the only one with eyes.....and the college guys were getting their glances in as well. Arizona caught one of them making lewd gestures when Callie wasn’t looking, which irritated her. Was is jealousy, that someone else was paying attention, or just the fact that guys can be so crude. Either way, she was going to make it stop. She got down off of her perch at the helm and approached "So fellas.....are ya havin a good time?"

"Um yes ma’am.....we’ve caught a bunch." one of the guys offered.

"Good.....Good....ya know I sit right up there in that seat and it gives me an excellent view of everything that happens on this boat, so unless you would like a fishing hook crammed into your nuts.......I’d stop with the disgusting gestures towards my friend.......got it?" Arizona got right to the point......literally.

"Um......yes ma’am.......sorry ma’am....." all three of the young men looked sheepish.

"Good......and quit calling me ma’am" Arizona smirked ....totally pleased with herself.....Yup she was starting to feel better now.

Callie was watching the exchange from her bait cutting station, but couldn’t hear what was being said, so when Arizona came up beside her she asked "What was that about? Were they looking for lessons from the master?"

Arizona smirked again "Yeah....something like that."

Back at the dock, Callie sprayed off the boat while Arizona filleted the fish that was caught....throwing the scraps to the pelicans. Callie actually finished long before Arizona did, it had been an excellent day of fishing.....almost as if the fish were migrating close to the islands for some reason. While she waited for Arizona to finish, she slipped her shorts off and stretched out on the front of the boat to get some sun. She had used the cold water hose to spray the remnants of bait off of her so the warmth felt wonderful on her skin. She must have dozed off a little because when she opened her eyes, Arizona was lying next to her....also in a bikini.....a black one that barely covered on the top or bottom. Callie’s mouth went dry and her brain went sort of dead because out of her mouth came one word "Hot."

Arizona opened one eye, peering over to where Callie was now sitting "What was that?"

A little flustered at her lack of filter, she managed "It’s hot......out here" and then laughed nervously.

Arizona snickered "Yeah it is.....shall we pack up and go home?"

"Do you not want to go over to the lighthouse and see what we can do?" Callie asked reluctantly, knowing that the subject would be sure to change Arizona’s good mood.

"No.....not today.....I can’t deal with it today. Besides, I bet Gert has a BLT with home grown tomatoes for us if we hurry." Arizona was determined to not let her mood drop after all Callie did for her today.

"Good to see your appetite has returned" Callie said smiling.

************

As they loaded their stuff into the pickup, an SUV of women about their age came roaring up next to them with a red head hanging herself half out of the window "Hey Zo!.....It’s blowin!"

Arizona looked over to Callie and then walked toward the vehicle "Oh yeah?.....How far out?" As she got close to the car, she could see three other women and then heard the hoots and hollers.

"Zo!.....where have you been?" a tall blonde woman asked.

"Yeah it’s been forever.......you spend too much time on that damn boat" the other, shorter blonde commented and then all in chorus shouted "We miss you!"

"It’s still about 150 miles out in the Atlantic, but their pretty sure it’s comin our way.......so we’ll see ya tomorrow night......right?.....Sound Rd access?." the red head asked.

"Um....I’m not sure......I’ve got a lot going on" Arizona tried to bow out gracefully.

"Arizona Robbins! I have never known you to back out on a beach hurricane party. What’s gotten into you?" Then the red head looked over to where Callie was standing "Or should I say who’s gotten into you?"

Arizona laughed "It’s not like that" which was true at this point although she wasn’t sure how long she could fight the pull towards Callie. "We’re friends......I’ve just been extremely busy. But, I might could come by for a while...we’ll see."

"Might?!..... hell........mites grow on a monkey’s ass.....you better be there or we’ll come raid Gertie’s house and then there will be hell to pay" the tall blonde chimed in. "And bring your friend........she’s hot!" The ladies drove away waving as they did.

"What was that about?" Callie asked

"Hurricane party......every time it blows." Arizona smiled "It’s become a tradition, when there’s a hurricane predicted to hit the banks, there’s a party on the beach....sort of a last hurrah in case things get bad......they invited you as well."

***********

At home, Arizona was right and Gertie had the makings for the best BLT’s on the island and a large pitcher of sweet tea. The sandwich had hit the spot and she had finally started to feel human again. It was only mid afternoon, but Arizona felt like she needed to sleep and in fact Callie did as well. With the late night and high emotion coupled with the hot sun from today, all their energy had been zapped.

"Gertie, I’ve got to say that was the best meal ever....thank you so much" Callie said. "I’m exhausted.....so I think I’m going to go crash for a bit."

"Lord, child....you don’t have to thank me." Gertie replied with a soft laugh.

Callie smiled knowing fully what the older woman was saying "Well....it was wonderful anyway....I’ll see ya later" with that she gave Gertie a peck on the cheek.

Arizona followed her out of the house "Calliope.....I do need to thank you....for everything. I’m really sorry if I said anything last night that hurt you....I never meant to.....you mean a lot to me.....so I’m sorry."

"Arizona I have a feeling we’ve only scratched the surface and I’m sure that before all is said and done, you and I will probably say a lot of things.....some may be a little hurtful, but I’m also sure that we’ll get through it, because I think you’re worth it and even if you don’t .....I do." Callie stepped closer to Arizona which made her heart race a bit.

"You scare the hell out of me. I haven’t allowed anyone as close to me as you already are, in a very long time. I know me and I’m afraid of.....me.....so please don’t let me hurt you." Arizona seemed very small and humble.

"I’m not afraid of you......I’m afraid of never getting to really know you......the you that you’ve hidden away. Even though I think I know a lot about you, there’s so much that I don’t understand. Please Arizona...let me in." The two women were very close at this point and Callie grabbed both of Arizona’s hands. "I’m going to go get some rest......I suggest you do the same. We’ll both feel better in the morning."

Arizona just nodded and squeezed Callie’s hands before letting go and returning to her home.

***********

Arizona did two four hour charters the next day, feeling much better than the previous. She stopped by the lighthouse before she went home and picked through the rubble to see if there was anything salvageable. The whole scenario made her sick to her stomach. She really had screwed up royally. She had noticed that the house where Tonya and Harry lived was empty. It seems that they had left the island. Part of her was relieved, but part of her felt very alone as well. As messed up as they both were, at least Tonya understood where Arizona was at and let her be. She sat quietly inside the lighthouse and thought about her life.....how she had ended up at this point. As she reflected on her past, the immense pain that she stuffed so deep, she grew more skeptical of her future. Calliope didn’t deserve to be brought into her shit......no Callie deserved better than what she could offer.

Evening came and Callie came knocking on the screen. "Hey Gertie, Is Arizona around?"

Before Gertie had a chance to speak, Arizona came down from her room dressed in white capris, a green t shirt and white deck shoes. She was carrying a light jacket with her. "Hey Calliope....I was just going out."

Callie looked confused "You were going out? I thought we were going out......your friends invited me as well."

"Yeah well, these women are hard core....they make the last group look like the bridge club. I’m not sure you’re up for this." Arizona was cold.

Callie couldn’t understand the change in Arizona’s attitude. She felt like they had really made some headway and now......it was like they didn’t know each other at all. "So are you saying that you don’t want me to go?"

"Maybe next time huh?" Arizona pushed past her and walked out.

Callie stood dumbfounded, not sure what had happened. Gertie watched the exchange "She’s running child. You must’ve struck a nerve and now she’s pushing you away."

Callie thought for a moment longer "How do I get to the Sound Rd access? I was invited.....I don’t have to show up with Arizona."

Gertie gave her directions.....it was within walking distance and then grinned big as Callie left. "That a girl" she said proudly.

***********

At the beach, the party had already cranked up to a respectable level. There was a bon fire burning, coolers full of beverages....mostly alcoholic, blankets spread out and women.....everywhere. Who knew the island had so many lesbians......although in all actuality.....some of them must be straight. Callie had grabbed a blanket of her own as well as a cooler full of beer and water. She wore a pair of khaki shorts and a navy t shirt over her swim suit. It was still pretty warm out and she thought she might wade out into the water. She scanned the area for the only person she knew and spotted Arizona talking to the red head from the day before. As she started towards them, the tall blonde....also from the SUV ran up to her "Hey there! I’m glad you came. When you didn’t show up with Miss thing over there, I wasn’t sure you would make it."

"Well, I’m here.....I’m Callie.....and you are?" Callie extended her hand to the blonde.

The woman took Callie’s hand and held it longer than was appropriate for the situation "Hey......I’m Terri. Come on.....you can throw your stuff over here with mine and we’ll get in on the next washers game."

Callie followed Terri further down the beach toward the water "Washers?....What’s that?"

"Oh it’s like horseshoes only on the beach. You take a couple of buckets and sink them in the sand about 20 feet apart and fill them with water. Then you have 4 three inch washers that you pitch into the bucket. One washer width away is 1 point, a leaner is 3 points and in the bucket is 5 points. It just gives us something to do while we drink and wait for dark.....when the more interesting games can begin." There was a quite distinctive seductive tone to that last statement.

Callie laid her stuff down and spread a blanket out. The two women sat and chatted as they watched the others play. Callie opened an ice cold beer and sighed happily as it washed down the heat.

Down the beach a little the red head noticed Callie sitting with Terri "Looks like your friend made it after all."

"What?" Arizona turned around to see Callie and Terri laughing and immediately felt uneasy. Was it anger that Callie had come anyway to obviously push her buttons or about how close Terri was leaning in? In any case, Arizona decided to play it cool, but keep a close eye on things from a distance.....she knew Terri all too well.

Back on the blanket, Callie had popped her second beer "So do you all really do this every time there is a hurricane predicted?"

"Not just predicted anywhere....only if it’s headed for us" Terri explained

Callie looked a little concerned "Is there any real danger with this one that’s coming? Do we need to evacuate?"

Terri laughed "the tourists will probably be asked to leave the banks, but we locals....we’ll stick it out. This is our home. But I’m sure Arizona will make sure your safe."

"Maybe.....maybe not" Callie rolled her eyes and took a deep breath in. She was occasionally looking in Arizona’s direction but they hadn’t made eye contact yet.

Terri looked confused "So.....you and Zo aren’t an item?"

Callie thought a little before answering "No....we’re.....friends, but right now she’s being moody."

"Hell...that describes Zo everyday" Terri laughed. "Okay...it’s our turn to play." Callie stood up and Terri introduced her to the others. The shorter blonde that was in the car was Deb and the last one from the SUV was Sarah.....a short stocky girl with a dark crew cut. "Why don’t we play teams....Sarah and Callie against Deb and myself....that way I can stand down her with Callie and give her some tips....since she’s never played."

The teams were set and the game began. Terri was all too helpful to Callie, even getting her more beer when she was empty. Callie was quickly heating up and removed her t shirt revealing her red bikini top. This didn’t go unnoticed noticed by anyone in the group...including Arizona. Terri’s jaw about hit the sand as she handed Callie her beer. It was Callie’s turn to pitch and she made a perfect shot, landing directly in the bucket. This elicited many hoots and hollers and a high five from Terri which lingered a little. Arizona’s attention had been on the game since the start. She couldn’t help but grin when Callie flashed that mega watt smile of hers....she lit up the place. At one point, Callie bent down to retrieve the washers and her shorts had slipped down low enough to show her bikini bottoms. Terri came up behind her with the apparent intention of helping her collect the items, but then used a hand on Callie’s backside to supposedly help herself stand back up. This made Arizona’s blood start to boil. Terri was a player and she could tell where her true intentions were. Arizona grabbed another beer for herself in order to quell her growing anger. The more she watched Callie interact with the others, the more her own arousal grew as well. At the end of the match, Callie and Sarah were the victors and they were to team up and play another twosome. Terri and Deb sat talking amongst themselves and Callie’s eyes drifted toward Arizona. For the first time since she had gotten there, their eyes connected. Callie couldn’t tell what emotion she saw there if any, but she was determined to let Arizona make the first move.....if she would. She directed her attention back to the game. Before her next shot, Terri brought her a Jello shooter "Just run your tongue around the edge to loosen it and then shoot it like a shot" she instructed.

Callie did as instructed "Damn....that is strong.....I don’t need too many of those."

Terri just grinned especially fond of the way Callie used her tongue "Well we’ll just let you stick to beer then." Terri went back over to the cooler to hook Callie up, but before she brought it to her, she slipped half of a pill into it.

The games continued until almost dark. The last match up was between Callie and Terri with the winner getting the prize of their choice. Callie had consumed five beers and the one Jello shot, but she was feeling very loose. When the game ended due to lack of light to see, Terri was in the lead. Callie felt flushed and went to the water to cool off. As she waded in, a wave knocked her down, but Terri had reached in to pull her back up. As she did, their bodies crashed together and Terri held Callie on her sides at the level of her breasts. They laughed together at first, but then Terri leaned in and captured Callie’s lips with her own. Callie pulled away slightly "What are you doing?"

"Collecting my winnings" Terri said as she kissed her again, this time deeper as her hand slid toward Callie’s breast.

Within the minute, Arizona was there "Take your hands off of her Terri" she said calmly but firmly.

"Mind your own business Zo" Terri said over her shoulder.

"She is my business, now let her go" Arizona replied even firmer. She was still calm at the moment, but it wasn’t going to last much longer.

At that point, Callie’s head cleared enough to notice Arizona "Hey Arizona" she giggled "I was wondering when you were going to come talk to me" and she reached for Arizona’s hand which was readily accepted.

Arizona pulled Callie to her and looked in her eyes "Are you okay Calliope?"

"I am now" Callie said with a sexy grin.

Arizona started to lead Callie out of the water and turned to Terri "What the fuck did you give her?"

Terri didn’t answer at first until she saw the look of indignation Arizona was giving her "It was only half of an "X"

"You might want to consider that if you have to drug a woman to get her to make out with you......there’s something wrong. If you ever touch her again, I’ll fucking kill you." Arizona was furious at her friend, but right now all she cared about was Callie.

"If she isn’t yours....what do you care?" Terri was none too happy with the turn of events.

Arizona led Callie to where her blanket lay in the sand, it was closer to the bon fire and Callie was shivering at this point. As the sun went down, the night ocean air had a bit of a chill to it. Arizona retrieved Callie’s things and brought them to where she was. She looked in the cooler "Okay....How about some water?" She handed the bottle to Callie who readily accepted it and then sat down beside her.

"Oh God, this is good....I’m so thirsty" Callie said as she chugged the water down spilling some down her chest "Oh...and that’s cold."

Arizona shook her head.....Callie was funny when she was drugged, but she didn’t like the fact that it had happened. She used her towel to wipe off Callie’s chest which elicited a response from the Latina "Mmm...I’ll give you twenty minutes to quit that."

Arizona couldn’t help but laugh, and Callie was so damned sexy she was finding it difficult to restrain herself although she knew it was the drug in Callie’s system that was making her so uninhibited. "Uh....Calliope.....you’ve been drugged.....ecstacy, so I need you to sit here for a bit with me while it wears off.....okay?"

"Sit with you?" Callie asked and then grinned real big "You don’t have to ask me twice."

Callie leaned her body into Arizona’s and rested her head on her shoulder. Arizona slid her arm around Callie’s waist in order to give her some support. Callie took in Arizona’s scent from her neck which was as intoxicating as the drug was. She couldn’t help herself as her lips found the tender flesh at Arizona’s neck and kissed it tenderly. Arizona’s system was immediately flooded with desire. She had only imagined the softness of Callie’s lips up until now and her imagination hadn’t compared to the reality. If she herself had consumed any more alcohol than she did, she might have let it go on, but knowing that the drug was most likely to blame for this, she couldn’t do it. Every nerve ending in her body wanted to, but she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself tomorrow.

"Ahhh.....Calliope, you need to stop. This is the drug.....it’s not what you want." Arizona hated to say it.

Callie giggled "Drug or no drug......this....is...what I want."

"Oh yeah?.......we’ll see tomorrow......but for now, you need to rest before we walk home." Arizona stopped Callie’s further assault on her neck and Callie pouted, but laid down on the blanket.

After an hour and a half, Callie woke up a little more lucid. She vaguely remembered the events of the evening, but not entirely. Arizona noticed that she was up and they gathered their stuff for the walk home. Arizona made sure Callie was inside her house before retiring to her own.
