Gathering

T and I drove out to the Lexington branch of Sweet Berry Farms and picked blackberries and a few strawberries today. It's roughly 47 miles from town, and the berries are $2.50/lb. So, we spent $3.11/lb total for 13.5 lb of berries. I checked the blackberry prices at Central Market afterward, and it's $5.99 for one of those little 6 oz. containers, or roughly $15.98/lb. !!!! Strawberries at the store were a more reasonable $3.49 for bulk. I think it was worth it! It was very gratifying to find a nice abundant patch of blackberries. Despite protective gear, my fingers are scratched to hell. If you ever go, I recommend sunglasses, in addition to all other sun-protection gear. The blackberry canes will suddenly appear near your face while you're focused on that next berry.

It is toward the end of strawberry season, but the strawberries are the strawberriest ever, despite being small. The blackberries are also really good, if a bit tart. I am freezing almost all of the berries except the ones I'll have for dinner and breakfast, and the ~4 cups I sent with T to his camping trip. They should be wonderful for smoothies.
