I really did luck out with the timing of my flight. Frontier was fully operational once the airport re-opened--they were all on time, and I saw most of the other airlines still had lots of cancellations and delays. The airport was truly a madhouse. It took an hour to get through security. Checking in online in the morning was extremely smart--people were waiting for over two hours to see a ticket agent at the airport. Just checking bags took 30 minutes (outside, on the cold, wet pavement with extremely inappropriate shoes).
Anyway, I'm home. I did not luck out with my hand, however. I had a bad eczema attack last week that became infected and turned into an abcess on my left hand. Probably staph, says the doctor. It's sitting on top of the thumb tendon. You never appreciate your opposable thumbs until you can't pick things up. (Momentary pause of thanks to evolution.) The doctor gave me doxycycline (oooh, spelled right without looking!) and Sulfameth/trimethoprim (had to look) for the infection and vicodin for the pain. I must say, the vicodin is working--when I had it for my root canal I hated it. Soaking three times a day for 30 minutes in hot, soapy water, then dressing with the topical antibiotic/pain ointment, gauze, and an ace bandage. (Details for
ms_msh and
thegypsy.) Going to see my own doc. on Tuesday morning. If the drugs don't do the trick I'll have to go to a hand specialist to have it opened up (career flashes before eyes).
I must say, I'm profoundly grateful for Austin Regional Clinic. My regular doc is in one of their offices, and they operate an "after hours"/weekend clinic too. I was in and out in less than an hour. We were prepared for it to take a lot longer. And we had the nicest pharmacist EVER at Walgreens.
I am also profoundly appreciative of
sttimothy, who located the office on our apparently crappy benefits web site and then took me there this morning after I woke up crying in pain. The poor man was short on sleep and is sick himself with the flu, but he didn't think twice (out loud, anyway) about taking care of me.
I think we're going to have to schedule a post-Christmas Christmas because neither of us are prepared, given all the circumstances this past week. I am really glad I made it back here. Being stuck in Denver would have been OK, but this is really where I want to be.
