Kittens are curious by nature. They will want to explore and play with everything in sight. Take these pre-cautionary steps to keep your newest family member safe:
- Remove or Spray Poisonous Plants - It’s best to get rid of the poisonous plants but if you choose to keep them, spray them with a Tabasco and water mixture.
- Lock Away Poisonous Substances - Use child proof latches on cupboards. Common danger items are fabric softener sheets, batteries, mothballs and cigarettes.
- Eliminate Strings - Cats love strings, rubber bands and craft supplies but they can cause serious health complications. Tie up cords from drapery pulls and window blinds and put them high out of reach.
- Hide Electrical Cords - Either hide these under furniture and rugs or spray them with a deterrent. Tabasco works well.
- Close Appliance Doors - Kittens love to hide in small places. Shut the doors to your washing machine, dryer and dishwasher.

Once your apartment is safe, it’s time to go shopping for kitten supplies. Here are the cat care products you need before you get the kitten:
- Litter Box - It should be at least 24 inches long or wide and big enough for your kitten to easily turn around, even when it is full-grown.
- Litter Box Liners - Line your litter box before pouring in the litter to make for an easier clean-up.
- Kitty Litter - Start by pouring a 2-inch-deep layer in the litter box.
- Food - If the kitten is at least 6 weeks old, you should buy commercial food designed for young kittens. If younger, consult your veterinarian.
- Bowls for Food and Water - They can be found at the pet store. If you have two cats, get them each a separate food bowl but they can share water.
- Cat Bed - Your pet needs a comfortable place to rest.
- Pet Stain & Odor Remover - Without a doubt, your precious new kitten will have an accident or two.
- Collar - A safety collar with a bell prevents you from losing your kitty.

After the new kitten gets settled in, you will want to add these supplies to your inventory:
- Treats - Try a treat that promotes healthy teeth and bones, like Milky Flake-um Treats.
- Scratching Post - Your kitten will use this to stay soft and pretty.
- Grooming & Shed Control - Look for a comb, a brush, nail clippers and shampoo.
- Toys - Cats are playful. Purchase or make homemade kitten toys.
