For Christmas, Chris tried to buy me the DVD of my favorite Mary Pickford silent film, "My Best Girl". Amazon jerked him around for months saying the shipping had been delayed and eventually cancelled his order because "he didn't respond to their e-mails" (in other words, they screwed up and blamed it on him)...
Well, we found out that its limited availablity was on account of it being out-of-print. After months of painstakingly searching for another copy, all I could find were $150+ "collectible" copies and the occassional Ebay auction that would end at more than I was willing to pay. FINALLY, I randomly looked at the vendors on Amazon after another Ebay auction didn't go my way...
A vendor that I had bought from before was offering it at the original DVD price. I snatched up a copy immediately... only to wait weeks for to find out that it, too, was backordered...
Well... the DVD finally arrived yesterday! It isn't half as crisp as the reel that played at the Tampa Theatre and the soundtrack isn't as good as hearing Rosa Rio play the wurlitzer live, but at least now we can remember a good date when we watch the DVD.
