A/N: Merry Christmas everyone! Be Safe!
This was the third week that Nyota Uhura had cancelled her music lesson with Mr. Spock.
Ever since their return from Omicron Seti III where the spores had affected the crew, she needed time to think.
She had tried to keep her attraction to the elusive, unemotional Mr. Spock in check and he was somewhat surprised when she had expressed interest in learning to play the Vulcan lute. He had quickly agreed to teach her and that surprised her as she had expected some resistance.
She enjoyed her lessons. He often sat close behind her positioning the lute on her lap and guiding her fingers. She could feel the heat radiating from his body. He spoke to her in soft, deep tones which she found somewhat erotic.
Even though he had never said so, she gathered that he enjoyed the lessons also and several times they had actually gone beyond the hour time limit he had given to her.
When they were on the planet and under the control of the spores, she had seen him with that girl Lelani. She saw how emotional and happy he was with her. While she was there and under the control of the spores, she accepted it. However when they returned to the Enterprise and she overheard him tell the captain that it was the first time that he had been happy, his words had smacked her in the face.
She knew that she had no right to be jealous. After all, they weren't in a relationship, and yet it did bother her. Maybe she needed to back away for a while. Maybe she was reading more into this than was there. She had to protect her feelings. She didn't want to end up like Christine, chasing after a man that didn't really want her.
Nyota sat at the lunch table with Christine Chapel. She looked up and noticed that Spock was standing in the doorway looking their way.
"Wonder what's up with him?" Christine asked nodding towards the door.
Nyota shrugged and didn't even look his way. Spock then approached their table and Nyota didn't look up but continued eating.
"Lieutenant, a word with you please." he said standing straight with his hands behind his back.
"I'm on my break. Can't it wait, Mr. Spock" she replied not looking up.
"I am afraid it is of the utmost importance" he replied.
Nyota continued eating for a moment and Christine stared at her wondering why she was disobeying a direct order. She looked from Nyota to Spock.
"Lieutenant!"
His voice took on a commanding tone and she knew that it was not a request.
She stared up at him.
"Very well, Mr. Spock." She pushed her tray back and stood up. She looked at Christine. "I'll see you later."
She then walked towards the door with Spock following close behind. He grabbed her by the elbow and steered her towards the turbo lift.
"Deck four" he said after they got on.
"Where are we going?" she asked. "I thought we were going to the bridge."
"We are not going to the bridge" he stated not elaborating further. She looked at him standing there with his hands behind his back.
She started to question him further, but decided against it.
They got off on Deck four and he led her to the conference room.
She walked in and sat down. She noticed that he chose not to sit but continued to stand.
"Lieutenant, I have noticed that for the past few weeks you have been avoiding our lessons. Is there a problem?"
Nyota looked at him surprised. Did he pull her down here for that? She looked at him and then began studying her nails.
"Since I am taking the lessons on my own time, Mr. Spock I don't see what the problem is. I have given you sufficient notice that I would not be taking the lessons, therefore I don't understand what the problem is."
He looked at her. "I would like to know the reason for your sudden disinterest. You were quite eager before."
"My feelings have changed somewhat since we returned from Omicron Seti III." she replied. "I feel that I need to rethink some things."
Spock looked at her. "Such as?"
Nyota didn't reply.
"Lieutenant, I fail to understand what our mission on Omicron Seti III has to do with our lessons. We have all recovered from the effects of the spores. We have taken the colonists to Starbase 27."
Spock looked at her still standing straight with his hands behind his back.
She did not reply, but continued to study her nails.
"Please explain your position."
Nyota would not look at him. "You said that being on the planet with 'her' was the only time you were happy" she answered finally.
Spock raised an eyebrow. "Jealousy does not become you, Lieutenant."
"Who said I was jealous" she countered "I am merely reexamining my options. Obviously that woman made you happy. Perhaps I need to take the time and find someone to make me happy. I doubt if I could make you happy, Spock. "
She looked at him. "Let me ask you a question. Why did you agree to the lessons?"
He stared at her. "You wished to learn-"
"I am sure that Christine Chapel would love some lessons if you did it merely because I wished to learn." she said interrupting him.
"Your point is well taken" he conceded. "I have no desire to teach Nurse Chapel."
"Well explain." Nyota said standing. "Are we only friends or what? Have I been misreading the signals you are sending me?"
"I enjoy your company, Nyota. I find you very intelligent and stimulating." He continued to stand watching her with his lips pressed together.
"But I don't make you happy." she said turning away from him.
"You are taking my statement out of context" he replied. "Lelani made be happy because for a period of time there was no war within me between my human half and my Vulcan half. That problem was totally forgotten because of the spores, therefore I could be happy."
He moved closer to her.
"I do not need spores for me to desire your company."
She had stood up and turned from him towards the door. He was now so close upon her that she could feel his breath on her neck.
She turned to him. "What are you trying to say, Spock?"
"I think you know what I am saying, Nyota. I wish for you to resume your lessons. I desire your company."
He had called her by her name and that surprised her. She studied at him for a moment, pondering his confession.
"You called me by my name. You surprise me Spock. I was wondering if I was wasting my time with you, expecting more from you than you were willing to give."
"I do not consider time spent with you a waste, Nyota and I hope that you feel the same way. I call you by your name so that will realize that I desire a more intimate relationship with you than that of a mere friend."
He watched her as she did not respond. He came over to her and grabbed her by the elbows and pulled her to her feet.
"Vulcan's do not display emotion, Lieutenant. You must understand that I desired your company and giving you these lessons was the logical thing to do to obtain that which I desired. Do you no longer desire my company? Do you no longer feel an attraction towards me?"
Nyota looked at him surprised.
"How did you know that I'm attracted to you, Spock?"
He was still holding her by her arms and looking at her intently.
"I have known of your attraction towards me for quite some time, Lieutenant Uhura."
He continued to stare at her and she looked away.
"Are you trying to tell me that it isn't just a one way attraction?" she pressed.
"If that were the case, then I would not have you here now asking you to resume your lessons." he replied.
"When will our time together advance to more than just lessons?" she asked boldly.
His face remained unchanged and he took her hand and ran his fingers along hers. "It already has progressed beyond that point. Everything, however, has it's time and place. Our relationship needs to progress in a logical fashion."
"Will you do a human thing for me and kiss me?" she asked.
"You may kiss me if you wish" he responded.
She pulled his face down towards hers and applied gentle pressure to his lips with hers. She could tell that he was trying to maintain his rigid stance, however her gentle exploration of his lips unnerved him somewhat and he pulled her closer to him automatically. She felt his body relax and he returned her kiss and then quickly pulled away.
"Kissing you can be very distracting, Lieutenant" he whispered "very distracting indeed."
He then appeared to regain his composure and returned to his previous stance with his hands behind his back.
"We must return to the bridge."
He then turned and walked out of the conference room.
Nyota smiled to herself. Things had worked out better than she'd hoped. She had hoped that he would pursue her once she cancelled the lessons. She knew from his behavior at the lessons that he was attracted to her just as she was attracted to him even though she doubted if he would ever admit it. Avoiding the lessons was the only way she could think of to force his hand.
She knew that being stripped of his Vulcan control on Omicron Seti III had revealed a side of Spock that normally would not be seen. She had been shocked to see his smile and jealous that it was not for her.
She walked onto the turbo lift with him trying to hide her triumphant smile. She did not have spores as Lelani had, but she knew that there was more than one way to get things accomplished.
