Woke up early Sunday in Portland, OR. Hit Starbucks and got on the road. Stopped along the way to take in a few sights.
Here's The Tickets at one of Bob and Jeff's favorite restaurants (short answer essay question: why would a pair of gay boys like Hooters?):
On the way back to Seattle, we passed the Copper Monuments:
Back in Seattle, we checked into the hotel and then headed back to the Seattle Center. C. had a red eye and wanted to try to see the Dead Sea Scrolls before she left. Unfortuantely, she couldn't buy or sweet talk her way in. So we went downtown and I successfully lobbied for lunch at Cosi. For those who don't know, S'mores are on the menu. They bring you chocolate, they bring you marshmellows, they bring you graham crackers, and they bring you fire. What could be better? Well, actually serving it instead of putting it on the menu to torture me. Apparently, I can take the issue up with the Seattle Fire Chief.
In the parking garage, I found a new type of reserved parking space:
While at Cosi,
letters_to_ed called around about our pre-show and we discovered that the rain outside had turned into snow. That put an end to a leisurely lunch. We hugged C goodbye and hopped in the car. The show was in Everett, about 30 miles north and at a higher elevation than Seattle. Snow wasn't favorable. It got worse as we got closer, but AM stayed the course and we arrived well before the show. We headed to a brewpub called The Flying Pig where the pre-show was. I had yummy boozy drinks (best Lemon Drop outside of the Cheesecake Factory). The restaurant played Stunt (I called
massbnlfan when IABD came on, but I don't think it went through). And there were pigs everywhere:
After dinner, there were several inches of snow on the car and we were only a few blocks from the venue, so we hoofed it. I wished for shoes with traction but
owlmoose was thankful for her scarf.
Caught Mike Doughty's set again. Ed came out and joined him for Unsingable Name. Afterwards, I learned exactly how much bacon a pan can handle (just enough).
Our seats found us placed right in front of Ed's Rock Star Platform. Again, I wish I'd had my camera out, especially when Ed did a slow rotation with a spotlight on his ass. The show had some nice highlights. I noticed the soundboard setlist before the show, so I knew what BLAMen track was coming, but didn't tell AM. I also noticed that the Holidays songs are popping up (but not the originals, wouldn't Snowman have made sense tonight?). Fortunately, I didn't notice anything other than that, but I think they stacked the list just for me. Enid, Alcohol, Upside Down! (oh my neck is so sore from freakin' out, only Straw Hat would have made it better; but C, really, the show sucked and it's good you were at the airport). It was a total surprise when Upside Down started. When the bass and accordian started, I reacted with my usual enthusiasm and the woman next to us at the barrier who sat for most of the show said "I guess she's excited". Pretty sure Ed did that for me, because I caught him watching me and cracking up again.
After the show, we collected a Stick (there's new ones! these ones are shinier!) and then slogged uphill to our car-igloo. We drove down to the bus area, but got the word that the guys were heading out for San Fran and given the weather, we weren't inclined to stay.
The drive back out of Everett was gorgeous. Snow on all the fir trees, that amazing glow to the sky you get on a snowy night. By the time we got back to Seattle, there was hardly any snow on the ground. Back at the hotel, AM collected The Tickets for their trip back to MA and said goodnight to catch her early flight.
Next post will be all about Monday in Seattle featuring the Seattle Public Library, but this is long and it's late. And well, now that I'm in San Fran, someone is asking me to go to bed...
