I think we all know where prohibition leads. Outlawing tobacco would only funnel money into illegal operations that provided it.
I didn't know that OPM had a non-smoking section. Of course, you still have to pass through the smoking section to get there.
Last winter, when I was in San Francisco, I had such a fabulous time at a small bar listening to a friend of mine's band play. It was a complete dive, but it was only half way through that I realized that it was completely smoke-free and how nice that was.
Every single time I got to the Launchpad, I come home not only stinking of smoke, but with a thick layer of it all over my skin, and on my lips. I'll be grateful at the next burlesque show when that doesn't happen.
Hell, there are long-time musicians who didn't themselves smoke, who still got lung cancer from performing in smokey bars.
Ultimately, I think we'll see that smokers still go out, and that they smoke in the smoking section. When the smoking ban in restaurants went into place, smokers complained about it a great deal, but restaurants have reported increases in their income since smoking was banned.
All that said, I remember, when I was a teenager, they used to allow smoking at The Frontier. In particular, the front room was smoking. And it was a lot of fun to hang out there. I think that the smoking allowed more table-to-table conversation -- I haven't seen that there since then. Which is a shame.
