I can't believe how much I absolutely love my job as a school librarian. I go home and want to keep working. I don't want to leave at the end of the day, I swear. And I even skip to my car in the mornings!
Not only do I love it, I'm also apparently good at it! The other librarian and I were asked my AP to teach a staff development session next week. I can't believe I'm excited to do that because I'm so shy around the other teachers. I guess that went away a bit when I showed them our new website and taught them about a citation site that is awesome and they were just amazed and gave us a bunch of compliments. Oh, and we also showed a video we made for the freshmen orientation at the faculty meeting and they all complimented us on it afterwards.
We held our first event this week. We had a casino night with blackjack and bingo and the kids absolutely loved it. We had about 25 kids show and we had it all planned out with tickets and prizes. The big ticket items were an atari flashback that was just collecting dust in my closet for the last couple of years and a few really nice leather bound books reprints of classics that are sold at Barnes and Noble. We also had a lot of other items that the kids purchased with their "earnings". We gave them popcorn and lemonade as refreshments. Many of the kids were also "working" since they are volunteers. We're up to about 15 volunteers that come in after lunch!!! There are so many of them, sometimes I scramble to find things for them to do. They are really great kids though, very well behaved. The good thing about having volunteers rather than actually having a class, is that they WANT to be there and help out. I'm pretty easy on them and let them have some fun while at the library, as long as they don't disturb others or break the rules. Since we have so many, we are going to make them an official school club and I'm thinking about calling the club "The Junior Librarians". It has a nice ring to it and makes it sound kind of classy.
Well, there's so much going on, I can't possibly update on everything.
