"Deliverance", by James Dickey. What a great book-- I highly reccommend. It makes one think a lot about how much of our true human nature we give up for the purpose of civilization. We do gain a lot, obviously...but we completely close off sooo many of our animalistic instincts. And really, where do they go? All that desire for sex and violence is still in there. It's in us all of the time, but we keep it locked up. And that is EXACTLY why we need things like "Grand Theft Auto" or violent slasher movies. We need to experience vicariously those violent tendencies...because they're always going to be there. That's why when we are kids we have to play games like cops & robbers and "army" or whatever. We need to get it out of our systems. I remember distinctly LOVING to play "investigation" with a bunch of kids on my block. A couple of us would be the cops, and we'd have to hunt down and kill all the bad guys. So cool-- harmless and healthy! So, I encourage you all to play violent video games and watch horribly violent movies!! Haha -- no seriously. I really do.
Toddlers and babies are so great. You put a bowl of spaghetti with sauce on it in front of a two year old, they will have a field day. They go at it with their fingers, get it allll over their face...because they aren't civilized (or socialized) yet. Everything is just instinctual. They want something, they cry. If they feel like it, they'll go over and knock a glass vase over just because! It makes them feel good. And I mean, how could it not? I would absolutely love to just pick up a huge lamp and throw it against the wall. That'd feel great. And I mean, it's just a lamp...I can buy another one. So why don't people do it more often? WHY?!
My "myths and archetypes" class is so amazing. It's taught by my love, Harold Schecter. What a great name =) GOD I love that man!!! So yea, there's an archetype called "the shadow" that exists in literature. And it exists in soo many stories that go back thousands of years, because subconsciously, humans know that it is a real thing. Simply put, it's all of the dark, twisted, violent things inside of you that you hardly even realize exist. They are so terrible and hidden, that you can't face them (like remember when luke chops off darth vader's head in that cave and when the mask blows off, it's really him? thats an example of the shadow).
It's crazy to think about those kinds of things. Human pyschology is amazing in that way. W are all so nuts!!! We really are, we are all. crazy. We have so much crazy twisted shit inside of us and NO ONE is excluded from that, not even the most good hearted person on Earth. That's why when people say "I hate people", I never agree because honestly, I find people so interesting (in general). I mean, there are obviously evil people in this world that I am disgusted by. Nevertheless, they are interesting to me. If I could, I'd love to sit down and talk to Hitler or Stalin and ask them what the fuck they were thinking...and just pick at their brain. Especially if i had some "veriteserum" (a potion that makes people tell the truth -- from Harry Potter). Imagine the things that might come out of their mouths?
Sometimes, I wish I didn't have to go to school in order to get a degree in something so that I can get a job. I wish I could just go and take whatever classes I want and learn whatever I felt like learning..no pressure.
The world and people and pyschology and why people do what they do and why things happen and what makes them happen...ugh it's all such a crazy mystery. We'll never REALLY know anything. Honestly though, I hope that when we die, we find out.
