In high school I was a little bit of a dork. Sift through old entries, those dating back to 2003, and you will find embarrasingly detailed observations about American Idol. When the top ten was announced, I actually created a list predicting who would win the entire competition. For the record, I'd like everyone to know that I was right. You're welcome, Carrie.
Despite being 5 years older and hopefully a little wiser, I feel the need to voice my opinions about Season 7. First of all, that makes me feel a little bit old. I remember quite vividly sitting alone on the couch in my basement (junior year in high school) discovering American Idol for the first time. I'm still not over the Tamyra Gray situation, but that's a story for another day. I'll also have everyone know that even then I was an AI expert. After Tamyra got the boot, I absolutely predicted Kelly Clarkson to take it all home. TG was robbed I tell you. ROBBED!
Season 7 Top 10, here's what I think.
Brooke White-She is probably the sweetest contestant in American Idol history. I think she gets a lot of negative feedback for being so nice, but I don't think it's an act. I thinks she's truly grateful for the opportunity to be on this show and is amazed that it's actually happening. Normally I hate really nice people, but I love this girl. She is not earth-shatteringly amazing, but she doesn't think she is. She knows what she's good at and excels in that genre. I first noticed and appreciated her when she sang "You're So Vain" and then was blown away after her rendition of "Let It Be." She is the most talented musician and has a strong and interesting voice. I think she will make it to the top 5, but probably not go any further than that.
Carly Smithson-We all know that "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is one of my all-time favorite songs. I don't know why, but I get really excited everytime I hear it, and never ever get sick of belting it out at the top of lungs. That being said, I am not a fan of Carly's. She definitely has a very strong voice and is arguably the most talented girl on the show (sometimes I agree with this statement, sometimes I don't), but I just don't like her. It may have something to do with her being Irish. It's American Idol. Perhaps she's a citizen, but I'm old-fashioned in the sense that I'd be happier if an All-American type of person won. I don't hate Carly, but I think her tatooes are weird, and her boyfriend's face scares me. She doesn't deserve to get voted off this week, but I would not be devastated to see her go.
Chikezie-Perhaps if he had a different name I'd be more inclined to support him.
David Archuleta-Today during my daily morning phone conversation with Liz, she asked if David Archuleta is really as good as everyone says. No. I mean, he's alright. He's definitely talented, but for God's sake, he was born in 1991. Last night they all sang songs from the year they were born and he did some ridiculous number about brothers and sisters and all of God's children living harmoniously. I mean, really? Simon Cowell expressed that the performance reminded him of a parade at a theme park with animated creatures dancing all around him. This was the most accurate thing I've ever heard come from Simon Cowell's mouth. It was all very Kids Incorporated, but he'll go far in the competition due to screaming little girls.
David Cook-Very Chris Daughtry. Very amazing. I've got nothing bad to say about him with the exception of the awful baby picture they flashed on the screen before he sang. This guy deserves to be in the top 3 at least. He's creative, original, comfortable on stage, and he can freaking wail.
Jason Castro-I've mentioned earlier that I would sleep with this man. He turned 21, don't worry. My sex offer still stands, but he did not impress me last night. He has a pretty voice and a pretty face, but his performances are getting kind of boring. The judges agreed with me on this one. He won't go home yet, but he REALLY needs to step it up.
Syesha Mercado-She's going to suffer from Taymra Gray, Jennifer Hudson, Latoya London syndrome. She's the typical beautiful skinny black girl with the killer set of lungs that always gets voted off 5th or 6th. I don't know why it happens and I also don't understand why everyone continues to be shocked and appalled when it does. Syesha is fantastic and her voice gives me chills. She is one of the only contestants this season who is consistently above average. She's also gorgeous, which doesn't hurt.
Ramielle Malubay-I'm over her. She's too cute, too spunky. She looks like she doesn't belong there and when I look at her, I often think I'm watching a high school talent show. I used to really like her voice, but it's boring now and she can't hold a candle to the other women on the show. Also, she really needs to stop crying hysterically every time someone gets voted off. That's the premise of the show, Ramielle. People get voted off. And don't tell me that you have become best friends with every contestant on the show. I don't buy it. Every time someone leaves you get closer to winning!!! Has that not registered yet? (I'm sorry. I know you miss Danny. It's going to be okay.)
Kristy Lee Cook-Good call on the song choice last night (Proud to be an American). I agree with Simon on that one absolutely. Not because I enjoyed it--it was not fantastic at all--but people are suckers when it comes to Patriotism. She did sing it well, though, and sounded better than she usually does. However, from what I can see, there's really nothing to her. At least Ramielle is humorous.
Michael Johns-LOVE HIM! He's my favorite guy (it's close between him and David Cook). They are similar performers, but this guy is sexier, and his performance last night was definitely the most memorable for me. Love, love, love him.
Agree? Disagree? Let me know.
