Student arrested on gun charges

BIG PINE KEY - A school bus driver told Monroe Sheriff's deputies a Marathon High School student drove by his bus Thursday and pointed what looked like a real handgun at him.

The driver said he was at a bus stop at the intersection of Hibiscus Street and County Road just after 7 a.m., picking up students when a white Chevrolet Lumina drove by with a teen hanging out a rear passenger window with what looked like a black semi-automatic handgun pointed toward him.

The driver called the school and reported the names of the students she recognized in the car. Deputy Tony Pabon who is assigned to the school located five students in or around the car in the school parking lot, including 17-year-old Edward Bernhard, whom the driver had identified as the individual waving what looked like a pistol.

The driver of the car was standing at the rear of the car, with the trunk open.

Bernhard reportedly told Pabon he had a "soft pellet gun," and two of the students in the car told Pabon that Bernhard had pointed the gun at the bus driver and had fired it.

In the trunk of the car, the deputy reportedly found four firearms and several bags of pellets. The guns included two reproductions of a Berretta 92F semi-automatic handgun, a reproduction of a Berretta fully-automatic mini-submachine gun and a reproduction of a Mac 11 submachine gun which resembled the real things so exactly, Pabon had trouble telling the difference, police reported.

Bernhard was arrested and he faces a charge of aggravated assault on a school official.
