A lot people seem to get this great kick out of being emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, or physically *better* that others. It can really be annoying. And heck, I even fall victim to this; I feel that I am somehow better than a few of my cousins who have gotten married because they found out they were pregnant/their girlfriend was pregnant
