Here comes my first book review!
Beware, my friends, there will be many places for you to correct! ^^"
Holes :: Louis Sachar
I've heard about this book and its author for a little long time. My previous book of Louis Sachar was a book about Bradley, and it was fun. Thus, when I found this book at Bangkok International Book Fair, I picked it up without any doubts. :)
From the backcover:
Stanley Yelnats' family has a history of bad luck, so he isn't too suprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a boys' juvenile detention centre. At Camp Green Lake the boys must dig a hole a day, five feet deep, five feet across, in the dried up lake bed. The Warden claims the labour is character building, but it is a lie. Stanley must dig up the truth.
Stanley Yelnats is the son of Yelnats family, he was punished by the judge, who sent him to Camp Green Lake because he stole the sneakers of the Baseball star Clyde Livingston. But the fact is, he didn't steal anything.
He was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and it's because his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather!
The Yelnats are the family of bad luck, and whenever unfortunate things happen, they wil blame their no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather, because about a hundred years ago, he stole a pig from gypsy woman and being cursed in every generation of the family.
So, Stanley wasn't too surprised when the judge sent him to Camp Green Lake.
They said he must went there to build his character, to be a good member of the society in the future. Every day, Stanley must dig a hole. Five feet deep, five feet across in the area of Camp Green Lake, which was the biggest lake in Texas, but now, the lake is dry. The little city near the lake is not there anymore. And Stanley must report to the Warden or Mr. Pendanski(everybody call him 'Mom') if he found anything interesting, and he will get the rest of that day off, from the sun and the hot weather.
One day, Stanley digged up something, he wasn't sure what is was, maybe a gold cover of lipstick. There's two alphabets on it, 'KB'. Stanley was so sure that KB is from Kate Barlow, one of the most feared outlaws in all the West. The Warden said that it's interesting, and ordered every boy in the camp to dig that hole all day.
Then, Stanley found out that he didn't went to Camp Green Lake to build his character. He went there to dig something, hidden under the barren land of Camp Green Lake.

lol, I'm not a good reviewer. But I was so much fascinated by this book. Louis Sachar is a talented writer, I like how he told us the whole story, between what is happening to Stanley and what happened in the past to Stanley's ancestor. I also love that 'no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather'.
Anyhow, this book shows me childhood, innocent, and friendship. It's something that I haven't read for a very long time. Try it yourself, and you will see that my word is true.
