Yesterday, we went to see
Eragon. (Haha. Sorry IMDB, it was all about him. :D)
Why I read the book: There was a dragon on the front cover. Also, my little cousin coerced me.
Why we went to see the movie:
- I'm lame.
- I hoped that it would banish all the Dawson's Creek look-at-me-and-my-big-vocabulary-ness of the book.
- IT HAS A DRAGON.
- from the trailers, Eragon, Murtagh and ARYA looked adorable.
- unless I'm wrong about today's date (ENTIRELY possible), it opened early in Trinidad \:D/
I needed to justify this more to myself than my friends, who were like 'yeah, okay, let's go' after they read my email to them yesterday morning [excerpt: Dragons! They're like flying, talking dinosaurs!** Um, Burger King! Eragon toys with your burger! (okay, I'm probably lying now) ]
I went in there with virtually no memory of the book, having tried my best to not commit much of it to memory even WHILE I was reading. I swear, while on the way, I asked my sister (the only other one there who'd read it), "The one who flies on Saphira, the main guy, what's his name again?" So, yeah, I've spoken about my 'meh' feelings on the writing/storyline of this series
before.* And I admit, I will read the next one whenever it's out, but that has less to do with caring and more with just wanting to know how it ends, having already invested so much.
- Holy moly! Eragon's pants? Were HOT. When Roran was leaving the farm, walking out with Eragon, F and I whispered to each other, "I love those pants!" and then both went, "Probably because they're kinda gay," and made everyone crack up. Later, N said she laughed because when Eragon went to home to Roran and they were all over one another play-fighting, she thought they were boyfriends. Everyone agreed. &hearts! They're great.
- I think I have... a thing... for Eragon. In the book, it was because, like I said, I pictured him looking Goblet of Fire movie Cedric. In the movie, it was because Ed Speelers was AWESOME. I adored him! He was cute and had this GRIN and was cocky and foolish and really made me like the character and worry about him. Did I mention that I thought he was very, very hot for a, what, 14 year old? I'm an awful person, I know.
- baby Saphira! All of us girls just kept cooing at her for the couple of minutes until her unexpected magical transformation, which by the way, smart move, writers. In fact, there were many shortcuts; but I heartily approved of them ALL -- except for the bit where Ed Speelers went out of character and proposed to me; that was missing -- They were right, I felt, esp the relatively short battle at the end. The stuff bet Eragon and the Wormtongue guy was all right, but the other people's fighting was boring and confusing. We were kinda like 'oh, it's over. that was short' but it wasn't really a bad thing.
- big Saphira! It was a very pleasant surprise that Rachel Weisz was her voice - just right, I think. Afterward, N said she acted like she was completely in love with Eragon. F, my sister and I all thought that was perfectly okay. N then agreed, and we all hoped she'd eat Arya in the next one. It's awesome to remember why people are your friends. :D
- the dialogue was not all that great, but at least the lines were short and they used small words. Mostly, we were like, 'who cares what they're saying anyway?' it was all about dragons for us. (and Ed for me!)
-Brom was so shockingly cool. he was funny! and made his lines fun and entertaining. We all liked him. F was very sad when he bit it and I promised her a diamond tomb when she died.
-Arya was fierce and I've always thought the actress was one of the prettiest people, so she worked for me.
- I'm trying to think of some bad things to say -- believe me, it's not that there's any shortage -- but I tend to care only about the things I like so I can't really recall them now... The bad guys blew: the gross Razac or whatever were scary-ISH but the Orcs were lame.
- Er, the song at the end sucked? And I'm most definitely not listening it on repeat? Sigh. It's not my fault! They knew I couldn't resist a stupid Avril Lavigne song.
- the song actually brings me back to the core of it (or what i imagine it to be anyway; who knows with all those words): Eragon and Saphira's relationship. From the car ride discussion after, they all felt it was well portrayed. We kept going on about 'The Bond' between them, like '"why did they live at the end?" "because of The Bond!" "why is that car next to us driving so weirdly?" "because of The Bond!" Personally, I would've liked a little bit more of it but, on the other hand, if you can't guess that Eragon's dragon scar, his magic, THEIR PSYCHIC LINK, her fire-breathing etc. mean that they're completely intertwined, well then forget you. :D They're no Laurence and Temeraire, but the movie did a fair job with them. Or rather: Ed Speelers did while talking adorably to the thin air.
In defiance of everything I would've guessed before seeing the movie, we all liked it, and so I guess I recommend it -- if only for the pure delight of Eragon's leather pants and DRAGONS!
Great. Now I wanna write about he and Ronon bond over clothes and how John desperately wants his own egg. Which, somehow segues to SGA 314:
I just. It was... It made me a little worried that nothing they ever do will be as great as this. The show was at its best. (This season overall, has made me come out of my rl SGA-watching closet: "Yeah, I watch Stargate: Atlantis! And it is AWESOME.")
This episode had everything, EVERYTHING I could've ever hoped for. Well, except Rodney bumping into John instead of the brunette girl (and how cute was she?) while still finding out about his mind-reading powers. But even pretending for a second that John may not have said Rodney's hot, wasn't it all written so plainly on John's face, both in his room and at Rodney's bedside? He had tears in eyes! John! I totally teared up. They're so bff, man.
I was completely unspoiled for this (and pretty much all other shows I watch these days, mostly because I hardly have the time actively seek them out) and it blew me away. Usually, this show's all about John & Rodney for me, and this ep had that (I was going to squeal about those here, but let's just say 'every single moment they were in the same scene') but Rodney's interactions with the rest of them were funny and touching and sweet and note-perfect that it's so easy to see why they were willing to jump in front of that bullet last week for him.
David Hewlett brought his A-game to this ep, and as usual, it meant everyone else around him was a little bit better too. (Ooh, and JF looked incredibly hot in this episode, it was distracting.)
I also wanted to scream in glee about
Buffy, Season 8 for a while, but I've run out of steam now. (!!!!!!!!)
*I love how in that same post, I vowed I'll never use BSG's cussword. Heh. Frak that.
** Pterodactyls etc flew, I got the memo.
