There have been quite a bevy of Maid Marians, but this mix is for the two best Marians in television: Judi Trott of Robin of Sherwood and Lucy Griffiths of the BBC's Robin Hood. There are some spoilers in the song notes in this post, but not in the actual mix.
This is a fairly eclectic mix: part historical music and part inspired music. I've done my best
1. Love - Nancy Adams
If you saw the Disney "Robin Hood" as a kid, you'll know this song. And the strange thing, is it's still accurate for these Marians.
Life is brief, but when it's gone
Love goes on and on
2. Glass Window - Mediaeval Baebes
From a Renaissance poem called "The Bridal Morn"
And through the glass window shines the sun.
How should I love, and I so young?
The bailey beareth the bell away
The lily, the rose, the rose I lay.
3. Robin Is to the Greenwood Gone - The Baltimore Consort
A once popular Elizabethan ballad, the lyrics of which are now lost but for a fragment preserved by Shakespeare in Hamlet (IV, v, 187) when Ophelia sings after going mad.
For bonny sweet Robin is all my joy
4. The Dress Looks Nice On You - Sufjan Stevens
Because the Marians are lively and beautiful.
I can see a lot of life in you.
I can see a lot of bright in you.
And I think the dress looks nice on you.
5. 42 - Coldplay
Death took one love from the RoS Marion and claimed the RH Marian.
Those who are dead are not dead
They’re just living in my head
6. Sway - Mooi
May Queen & Winter King
I was born in summer time
You upon the snow
Remember when I say:
I love you this way....
7. Woman King - Iron & Wine
See Marian. See Marian fight. Fight, Marian, fight!
Hundred years, hundred more
Someday we may see a
Woman king, sword in hand
Swing at some evil and bleed
8. Pale September - Fiona Apple
For Robin, from his May Queen. ♥
And all my armour falling down, in a pile at my feet
And my winter giving way to warm, as I'm singing him to sleep
9. Crazy English Summer - Faithless
For the lover left behind.
Grass is greener without the pain,
I think that I'm changing but I'm just the same
My sun is a ascending again
And I've nothing but you on my mind
10. With Arms Outstretched - Rilo Kiley
Now some days, they last longer than others
But this day by the lake went too fast
11. The Sun - Mirah
And we are the ones
With the parts and the motion
We fill up the sky
And we burn with devotion
When our bodies are done
And hard times are over
Remember to breathe
12. Hour Follows Hour - Ani DiFranco
For the desperate but brilliant life of the outlaws
Hour follows hour like water in a river
And from one to the next we don't know
What each hour will deliver
We just call it like we see it
Call it out loud as we can
And then afterwards we call it all water
Over the dam
13. Electric - Tristan Prettyman
For BBC RH's Robin
Like cups and condensation
I am bound to you
I cannot break the situation
He’s every subject
Of every song
Like the wind carries
He moves me along
14. Raglan Road - Loreena McKennitt
Words by the Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh, put to the tune of "Dawning of the Day".
(And thank you,
grondfic, for that info.)
For Robin of Loxley from Robin of Sherwood
On Raglan Road on an autumn day,
I saw him first and knew
That his dark hair would weave a snare
That I might one day rue.
I saw the danger and yet I walked
Along the enchanted way
And I said "let grief be a falling leaf
At the dawning of the day."
15. Marion Tells Robin Of Her Encounter - Ensemble Anonymous
From Adam de la Halle's Le Jeu de Robin et de Marion
16. Lady Marian - Clannad
From the soundtrack to Robin of Sherwood.
Back Covers
The same, but one of each Marian and one of both. They're all included on the zip.
