Ok so... seeing as how I am in Japan, back from my Tokyo adventure, and still have 3 weeks of nothing to do I was re-re-re-rewatching gundam seed destiny today and did another random websearch looking for the 'Episode in which Kira asserts himself and everyone looks shocked' (still unfound btw) and I ran across this:
http://www.wizarduniverse.com/013108gundate.html SHINN ASUKA
Case History: Shinn was born to suffer. The citizen of the neutral Orb watched his parents and little sister die in the first war. As an orphaned refugee, he abandoned Orb to become a soldier for the ZAFT military-nominally to protect other Coordinators, but mostly to avenge his family.
Diagnosis: Besides his unhealthy fixation on his dead sister, our boy endures the most dire crisis that any hero can face: being upstaged on his own show. Every time the stars of the original Gundam Seed war (i.e., Athrun and Kira) appear onscreen, Shinn withers from the lack of spotlight. It doesn’t help that he looks eerily like Athrun and Kira’s love child*.
Recommended Treatment: A slap in the face. Make that a thirty-second slap-a-thon, since one or two slaps don’t seem to be enough. Someone’s gotta snap him out of his self-centered reverie.
Inevitable Outcome: Sadly, some people don’t get the once-a-day face slap they so sorely need. Shinn will probably continue to blame everyone else for his problems and inability to move on. To be fair, he’ll fit right in with just about every other Gundam pilot.
Note that the bold parts are me, not the original author. But this is soooo funny because it's soooo true (If you haven't watched Gundam Seed or Destiny you should). But seriously, I would have stopped watching Destiny after episode 5 and never looked at it again if they hadn't reintroduced all the original Gundam Seed characters & made this show more about them than the new characters. The new characters suck, Shinn's reasons for what he does are ridiculous and in the end of the show he STILL hasn't come to any sort of epiphany or realization that he is crazy and his outlook on life needs to change. The only reason he's still alive at the end is because Athrun & Kira were too busy (and too nice) to kill him off after he was defeated.
Lunamaria is about as interesting as leftover apple pie, and Rei is only slightly less psychotic than his predecessor from Seed. The ZAFT characters have more going against them than for them including their personal histories & personalities. If the show was meant to be about them and the crew of the Minerva then they should've been more identifiable with the audience and not made so that we want to smack them every 5 minutes.
* Don't get me wrong, when it comes to Gundam I am pure canon on the pairings except Athrun/Meirin because I can't figure out how that happened. However in other fandoms I do support yaoi.
Ok ok done ranting lol. Please go back to enjoying your lives people.
