Honestly? I thought it was the best fucking episode they've had in a long time.
I love Castiel, too, no lie there, but one thing that the character did that I didn't and don't like was always give them an easy out. He was a constant deus ex machina following them all around waiting to pop in and snap his fingers and fix everything. It made the tension and suspense of the show void, the monsters and problems, big as they were, not scary. The only solution was to come up with progressively bigger and actually stupider conflicts, a lot of which caused the main characters--who are still and always will be Sam and Dean, I don't even care--to be against each other and in Dean's case, not even the Dean I remember loving from the beginning of the show.
So in many ways, I approve of Castiel's taking a leave of absence. Do I believe he's gone for good? No, I don't. Am I going to take my toys, tuck my tail, and leave the fandom sandbox at the possibility that I'm wrong? Nope. I've seen people doing it and all I have to say to that is bon voyage, people. It's been real. Now, if he does stay gone and they sweep him under the rug and that's just the end of it, I might have something to say about that because the show has been fucking up in a big way for a couple of seasons and then it just up and pulls a Castiel, snaps its fingers and makes him gone, and no, that is fucked up.
But right now? I'm surprisingly cool with it.
Oh, and Sam and Dean with the whole making him believe that the real world is real using pain? Man, I'm in love with that idea right now. So much potential for stuff there, damn. Like, I can absolutely see Sam as a cutter now and that is weirdly hot to me. Or hell, S&M fic, which would again be hot, always assuming it was done right. Then there's the hallucinations themselves. So much possibility there all over the place, and I actually do not see Castiel's "death" as any kind of hindrance to my Sam/Castiel OTP fantasies either, which is always of utmost importance.
In short: fucking brilliant.
