I may just be slow to notice this--that does happen a lot--but I've started to notice that if you read a really fantastic story and it has a sequel, the sequel is almost always just as horrible as the original was amazing. So much so that I have found myself liking the original story less after reading a badly executed sequel.
I don't usually find this goes for original fiction nearly as much as with fan fiction, either. I'm seriously confused by it. I mean, why does this happen? And if you can't add something worthy to your first story, why do you need to write a sequel?
Imagine me, Reader X, and I've read your first story and it was so brilliant that I may even have left a comment saying so. Then you write a sequel to that story and I'm thinking HELL YEAH because that means more and more is always better than less. Poor, unsuspecting Reader X clicks on the link and they read it because they want it to be good and the first one was truly brilliant so the second one can't be BAD, can it?
Poor, silly, stupid, optimistic Reader X. No.
Seriously, this is baffling to me. Some of these sequels read to me like they were written by completely different people from the first one. Wtf is with that? I feel ridiculously betrayed when I read one of these bad sequel stories. It's like the first one was good, but it was also a trick. Something. The writer shot their load on that one go and that's all they had to give, the rest is just crap.
Or is this just a case of a writer trying really hard to get more out of an idea that doesn't inspire them anymore? Do you want a sequel, too, but you're out of ideas? THEN STOP. If you can't write it, if the ideas don't come to you, then please just quit it. That is the difference between getting an idea and trying to have an idea. Trying to have an idea is like being constipated. Whatever comes out of it usually needs to just be flushed. But some of this is just bad writing. Bad metaphors and similies abound and it's just... it's bad. I'll leave it at that. It's BAD and that is WEIRD because in the cases I'm talking about, the previous stories are not badly written. They are very well written.
