Independence Day

You know that '96 movie with Will Smith in it - "Independence Day"? The one where he saves the world from aliens and it all just happens to occur on July 4th? And then the president makes that hardcore speech?

This journal isn't about that movie.

This journal is about the American day of celebration on July 4th. I don't call it "the 4th of July" because that's like saying "the fifteenth of April" or "the third of November", which sounds to me like you're not holding any respect for the day; like you're not distinguishing it from any other, by calling it the same thing you would call any other day. I call it Independence Day, because that's what it is, a day when our country declared itself independent from any other foreign government body. It's a wonderful celebration, I think, and one that all Americans have in common.

Anyway, our family never does anything that special on Independence Day - sometimes we go to our neighborhood parade and party, and eat hot dogs and watermelon like anyone else. But this year, we went to a pool party, something we don't do often, and seeing as I didn't really like any of the people at the pool party, I hung out with my sister the whole time, laughing and making fun of ourselves.

Then we did some minor fireworks. You know the kind - sparkles and firecrackers. Of course, we only used half, because we're going to use the other half on the fifth of November - for Bonfire Night, a British holiday where you traditionally have a bonfire to celebrate the failure of Guy Fawkes to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I. Although it's become such a custom in my family, I don't think much about it anymore, I still have to pause and think it funny, that I celebrate the two so close to eac hother

When I celebrate Independence Day, I don't just celebrate the signing of the Declaration of the Independence. I celebrate every single achievement in American history. Heck, I celebrate this country in general. I am proud to be an American, and I will hoist my flag high.
----------------------------------------
With the screaming bright lights and loud roar of many guns, you could
almost imagine it being a holiday, one with laughter and much
celebration. But I sit here, as a captive, writing this poem that I much
suspect no one will ever hear------------------------------------------------
But look; the dawn, and with it the flag. Our flag; of ocean blue settled
cozily behind white stars, and stripes of brave red, and proud white.
There, again and again rockets bright white and red, they signal a victory
for us. A victory for the home of the free, and the land of the brave.
