Summary: Mal runs after Kaylee
Organizational Post Mal made an attempt to clear away the moon brained look he was sure was spread across his face. He wasn’t certain he had done it properly, but it would have to suffice, as it wasn’t going to get much better with the way he was feeling just now. All he had was questions just now, and he hadn’t any answers. It was a wee bit disconcerting, seeing as how generally he figured he had all the answers. Now, not so much.
He just stared at the door through which Kaylee had fled, and wondered. There was probably something he ought to do about now. Things had happened between the two of them. And these Things weren’t just going to go away on their lonesome. Something would have to be done. And Mal was going to do it. Just as soon as he figured out what that Something was. As a start, Mal got up from his place in the galley and headed out the door Kaylee had left by.
Now he figured he had two logical choices. He could go after her or he could go to his bunk and stew a little bit on the matter. Problem was, Mal wasn’t sure any stewing was gonna help matters much, and he wasn’t particularly in a mood to play hide and seek with the svelte mechanic. He sighed and ran his hand over his face as if to wipe away the distress.
Given that leaving it be would only have him more ornery come chow time the next day, Mal chose to hunt for Kaylee. The way he saw it, it was likely that she was one of three places; her bunk, the engine room, or Inara’s shuttle. The latter being a wee bit awkward, he decided to start with her bunk and go from there. He’d leave the shuttle for last. He didn’t deal too well with womenfolk to begin with, and he figured that dealing with one solo might be a bit easier than having two to gang up on him with their wiles and such.
Tentatively, Serenity’s captain descended into Kaylee’s bunk with something akin to trepidation lingering round his midsection. He found himself breathing a sigh of relief when she wasn’t there, which was closely followed by a feeling of dread that came with the realization that if she wasn’t there, there was a 50/50 chance that she was in Inara’s shuttle. Placing that thought firmly in the back of his mind, Mal trundled down to the engine room. He was relieved to find his young mechanic there, staring pointedly at a spot on the wall somewhere to the right of him.
“Mei mei,” he began, “I’m sorry. I know I took you by surprise, an’ I’m all manner of sorry if…if I’ve offended you in any way…”
Kaylee shot the captain a wounded look. In all truthfulness, her heart was soaring and her stomach seemed to be doing some kind of belly flop. It had been wonderful. She was still kicking herself for running off like that. Now Mal was apologizing to her, and it felt a lot like maybe…like maybe he hadn’t really meant it. Like it was a mistake. She felt fit to burst out with tears.
“Y-you didn’t offend me Cap’n,” she retorted, “Just caught me by surprise is all an’…an’ if you think it ain’t appropriate, then well…then we’ll just never do it again.”
Kaylee clammed up, knowing that she had probably already said far too much on the subject. After all, when all was said and done, Mal didn’t approve of shipboard relationships, least of all those involving himself. Surely it was just a spur of the moment thing that would come out in the proverbial wash.
Mal was taken aback. True, he wasn’t much for romancin’ and whatnot, and certainly not an advocate of such behaviour on his ship. But still…him and Kaylee seemed perfectly appropriate just now. He strode over to Kaylee’s hammock with conviction and took her tiny hands in his.
“Look Kaylee, if I didn’t think it was appropriate I wouldn’ta done it,” he affirmed, “I’m not sayin’ anythin’ we get into here with each other is gonna be perfect, cause I think we both know it’s not, but I am willin’ right now to give it a chance, however small. There’s only one thing. I think…I think it might be wise to keep it from the rest of the crew. Just for now, until we get the bugs an’ whatnot worked out. Dong ma?”
Her heart in her throat, Kaylee found it hard to swallow. Her head was a sea of elation; she swore she could actually feel the joy as it swam through her mind.
“Sounds shiny, Cap’n,” she managed to croak out before Mal’s lips were upon hers again.
