Mom Cat

A few more details on the new kitty. A woman in my town had put up a notice on the food co-op bulletin board saying that she had free cats available. In early May a scrawny mother cat with three kittens had turned up at her office in Suitland, and she ended up bringing them home. The mother was friendly enough to not be feral and she was skin and bones from trying to produce enough milk for the kitties, who were already about four weeks old at the time.

She (the woman) placed two of the kittens in a new home on Sunday and is keeping the third kitten for herself, but she wanted to find a new home for Mom Cat, because she already has an adult cat. In the meantime, she had gotten Mom Cat spayed and vaccinated against rabies, even though she was still nursing the kittens a bit.

Mom Cat is 1 to 3 years old, DOES have all her claws, and has fluffy, medium-long hair in patches of gray and white. She has filled out to normal weight (but her frame is a bit smaller than Pumpkin's).

Last night she was still kind of freaked out because two of her three kittens were gone and she is still kind of hormonal (or so the human rescuer explained). So I sat in the back room for a while and played with the adorable kitten, named Munchkin, who indefatigably and un-shyly battled the end of the grass stalk I was teasing her with. Mom Cat hid behind some parts of old furniture propped up against the wall, although once she stuck her head out and I petted her gently.

When the human rescuer put Mom Cat into my cat carrier, she sprayed a little Feliway onto a paper towel and put it into the carrier along with the puddy. She still made an occasional sad meow.

Mom Cat had vanished into the bowels of the bedroom by the time I went to sleep last night. Around 2 a.m. I woke up and heard a repetitive meowing, and for some reason I thought of the New Testament verse, "Rachel weeping for her children." I did not see any sign of the kitty this morning -- food and litter box untouched. Hope she's OK.
