Too much pop culture....

I will get back to my travelogue in a second, but first I just wanted to write down a couple of comments/questions.

First, did anyone manage to avoid the wall-to-wall coverage of the memorial service for Michael Jackson?? At work the IT department actually turned on the plasma screens in the big conference room for employee viewing. I suspect that was done so that people's surreptitious viewing of CNN.com and other streaming-live-video sites would not bring our entire network down. Can we now have just a little less coverage of this guy, please??

Second, WTF is up with the rebranding of the SciFi Channel as SyFy?? What, the cable channel that's supposed to challenge our minds and stretch our imaginations is now reaching out to people who can't figure out that the C in "sci-" is silent?? Or that "greater" should not be used as an adverb (as in "Imagine Greater")? Yeah, I realize this was announced a while back and I just noticed it now, but still, the dumbing-down frakking reeks.

science fiction, pop culture
