The Boston Globe reports that Charlie's true history has moved out from the underground. As in "Charlie and the M.T.A." I posted something about this when one of the songwriters died a year or two ago, but this story says that the song really was subversive and the Kingston Trio sanitized the lyrics to avoid being blacklisted.
Accompanying the song is a video of an older guy named Sam Berman, who sings the original lyrics in the video and who apparently sang lead on the popular version.
