So I just read
beckielric 's post about the law in Afghanistan, and googled it for more info, and came across this article:
kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/three-cheers-for-afghan-women/, and got to this part:
The young women stepped off the bus and moved toward the protest march just beginning on the other side of the street when they were spotted by a mob of men. “Get out of here, you whores!” the men shouted. “Get out!” The women scattered as the men moved in. “We want our rights!” one of the women shouted, turning to face them. “We want equality!”
The image of that one lone, frightened girl facing down those enraged men...I don't know what happened, but I just burst into tears. Those impoverished, beautiful, heroic women.
Usually, I'd think, Oh, how sad, oh, things need to change, growl about it for a few minutes, then move on. But we just read this book in class, called comfort women, about a 15 year old girl kidnapped by the Japanese and forced into sex slavery for the army. Very graphic, very horrifying, very moving. And this just reminded me eerily of it...how is demanding sex NOT rape? How is this happening??
Ah, well. Maybe it's just stress from lack of sleep. Usually I don't cry about this stuff, just get really mad. But I swear to God I'm gonna have nightmares about that girl tonight.
