The cocktail reception~ 9pm, Feb 13th 2019

“I don’t feel good Yuto-kun. I want to leave,” Inoo tells the taller boy. He feels suffocated being in this crowd.

“Dame dame,” Yuto gently pats Inoo’s back. “This after party is part of the event. You can’t leave Takaki-san. He wants to introduce you to his business partners and clients.”

Inoo sighs. After the encounter with Yabu during the announcement just now Inoo has been feeling restless. Not to mention all those scary eyes staring at him since he entered the hall. He wants to escape from this place as soon as possible.

Takaki is with Keito not far from them, discussing some matter related to business, leaving Yuto in charge of Inoo during his absence. ‘A while’ has already been 25 minutes now.

“Daijyobu Kei,” Yuto reassures. “You’ll get use to this soon. As Takaki-san spouse you will have to accompany him to formal dinners and state occasions.”

“It’s not that… I’m scared Yuto-kun…” Inoo holds Yuto’s hand.

“Why?”

“That man… has been staring at me… The one with yellow necktie…”

Yuto looks around from his seat. He immediately sees the person Inoo is talking about. A petite man is looking at Inoo, while sipping the champagne from his glass.

“Do you know him?”

Inoo shook his head. “No…” he grips Yuto’s wrist tighter.

Yuto takes out his cell phone, dialling Keito. From afar he can see Keito picks up the call.

“Kei-ty, please get Takaki-san here. Kei-san is not feeling well.”

Keito did not reply to Yuto. He turns off the call and whispers to Takaki. The man politely bows to the guests and return to his spouse immediately.

Inoo hugs Takaki the moment Takaki arrives. Yuto and Keito look at each other; both appear concern seeing Inoo in such a state.

“Are you all right Kei? What’s wrong?” Takaki asks. Inoo keeps silence, not letting go of the hug.

Yuto whispers something to Keito, causing Keito to frown. He turns to his right, and as Yuto had just told him, the man with yellow necktie is still there.

“Yuya, your ‘brother’ is here,” Keito speaks.

Takaki keeps his composure. “Did he do anything to Kei?”

“He was staring- like seriously staring at Kei-san,” Yuto replies. “The crazy-stalker kind of stare.”

“Let’s go home Yuya,” Inoo begs.

Takaki kisses Inoo’s head. He feels sorry for his spouse. Inoo had to face Yabu Kota today. The press conference became ‘Takaki and Yabu compete for Kei’ event. Takaki can only imagine what other title may come out in the newspaper tomorrow.

And now, another headache awaits.

“Let’s get you a room,” Takaki suggests. “Yuto, can you help me to bring Kei upstairs? Just get any empty suit. Kei can rest there.”

“But the function is not finished yet,” the petite man is now standing close to the group. “A good spouse should be by your side till the end, Onii-san.”

Takaki rolls his eyes, ignoring the man’s word. “Go with Yuto okay? I’ll be with you later,” he kisses Inoo’s forehead.

Inoo didn’t argue. He let Yuto leads him to exit the hall, leaving Takaki, Keito and the small man at the venue.
.
.
.
.Takaki waits until Inoo and Yuto vanish from his sight. The smile on his face disappears the moment the door to the hall is closed.

“What are you doing here, Chinen-san?” Takaki questions in a rather scary tone.

Chinen laughs. “Oh come on Onii-san, there’s no need to be so formal,” he put the champagne glass on the table. “We both know what your ‘real face’ is.”

“I know you are the one who reports my high school issues to media,” Takaki calmly replies. “I swear if we are not in this hall I would have punched your face.”

“Owh… Mr. ‘nice husband’ becomes all scary now. Kowaiii…” Chinen continues to teases. “I am just here to congratulate you. It’s rude you know, not inviting your family to such joyful occasion.”

“YOU ARE NOT MY FAMILY,” Takaki glares at Chinen. “Leave before I break your ribs.”

Chinen sneers. “I am hoping for you to do it. Come, hit me Onii-san.”

Takaki makes a fist.

“Perhaps it is wise for you to leave Chinen-san,” Keito quickly interfere. “There is nothing to discuss here.”

“All right all right, my defeat today,” Chinen raises his both his hands. “But remember Takaki Yuya, this is just the beginning.”

The small man finally leaves. Takaki, still with fist on his right hand, takes a deep breath. He makes his way to the secluded empty corner nearby. Keito tails his friends to make sure Takaki didn’t snap. There are still a lot of reporters around. He needs to protect Takaki’s image. They couldn’t afford Takaki behaving violent again, not after apologizing to the media in the press conference earlier.

“I have bad feelings Keito,” Takaki voices his worries. “Yuri is cunning. I don’t want him to hurt Kei and Ainosuke,” the man finally sits.

Chinen Yuri is no stranger to Takaki. Takaki was adopted by Chinen’s family before Chinen Yuri was born. This is the family that abandoned him after the birth of their biological son. This is the family who treat him like a stray dog- that simply chased him out from the house when they no longer need him.

If Takaki is to describe Chinen, he would use ‘arrogant’ and ‘cocky’. There is 5 years of age gap between them. Growing up, the boy intentionally put Takaki in difficult situation. It was hard enough for Takaki being neglected by his adopted parents- Chinen Yuri did not help making things easier either. The ‘brother’ will purposely cause trouble back in their teen years- but Takaki was the one receiving the blame. Takaki was often punished for things that he didn’t do. Chinen Yuri even got the school bullies to hit Takaki, in which Takaki fought back. That was the start of his ‘delinquent’ period. He was mainly just stood up for himself.

But nonetheless, his adopted parents favoured their own son. They didn’t bother to hear Takaki’s explanation, to the extent the boy stop defending himself anymore. In the end, Takaki was removed from the family registry.

If Takaki didn’t meet Keito, he will never become who he is now. He is indebted to Keito’s family, who were kind enough to take this lost man and give him a place to stay.

Keito is not just a friend- Keito is a brother to him.

“We’ll hire bodyguard,” Keito tries to comfort his friend. “He can’t get to you now. No one can. Trust me he wouldn’t dare to mess with you.”

“That chibi is full of tricks! He must be planning something! Why else would he turn up here today?”

“The more reason to be wary of your actions Yuya. Don’t let him get into you.”

Takaki gives a long exhale. He knows Keito is right. He should not let Chinen toy with his mind. Takaki must keep himself calm to protect his family. He can’t let Chinen’s words to cloud his judgement.

“Just one more hour Yuya. Let’s get this cocktail reception over with.”
.
.
.
.
“Can you do it Hikaru?”

“Wow Chinen-san. I never thought you were attracted to Kei too.”

“No, I’m not interested with that pretty boy at all.”

“Then why?”

“I just want Yuya to suffer.”

“Kota is here.”

“His presence never stops you coming to my place. Now suddenly you have the ‘good spouse’ moral?”

“Our affair is mutual and consensual. What you are asking me to do now is not.”

“I know you hate Kei, for whatever reason. So it is a win-win scenario for both of us.”

Takaki has been standing alone near the high table close to the stage. He sent Keito to check on Yuto and Inoo, making sure the two are not harmed. Meanwhile he spent the remaining time of this cocktail reception feigning smile for the crowd. Takaki really wishes to end this reception soon.

“Takaki-san, nice to meet you,” Hikaru approaches Takaki with two glass of wine on his hands.

Takaki did not respond.

“I’m Hikaru,” he gets closer. “Yaotome Hikaru. Will you drink with me?” he hands one of the wines to Takaki, who is still giving him the cold stare.

“No thanks, I don’t feel like drinking tonight.”

Hikaru put the wine glass on the high table. “You are alone. Where’s your spouse?”

“I believe that is none of your concern, Yaotome-san,” Takaki politely refuses the topic.

Hikaru chuckles. “You are very protective of Kei. It’s admirable.”

Takaki is rather shock to hear Hikaru calling Inoo with his first name. “Who are you?”

“Perhaps if I tell you my legal surname you will talk to me,” Hikaru sips from his glass. “Yabu Hikaru- Yabu Kota’s spouse.”

Takaki could feel his pupil dilated. What now?

“I have nothing to talk to you. Please leave.”

“Don’t you feel jealous Takaki-san? Knowing Yabu Kota is still concern about Kei?”

Takaki keeps silence.

“I know I do. I am jealous every time he mentioned Kei or Ainosuke,” Hikaru continues. “Now tell me… don’t you feel angry at Kota?” the boy is now pacing around Takaki, talking in a rather provoking manner. “That man slept with Kei. He ‘tasted’ Kei before you.”

“I love Kei. His past doesn’t matter to me,” Takaki sternly replies right in front of Hikaru’s face. “Whatever you say will not change my mind.”

“Doesn’t it bother you, that every time you touch Kei, he might compares you to Yabu? ” Hikaru brings himself close to the taller man.

The two exchange fierce glare.

“Don’t you want to know, where Kota and Kei now, Takaki-san?”

.
.
.
.Inoo can feel his heart is racing fast. He is really feeling uneasy with this whole situation. Inoo is sitting in the hotel lounge, accompanied by Yuto.

In front of them, sits Yabu Kota.

Yabu caught them heading to the elevator from the cocktail reception hall. Yuto, realizing the man walking in their direction, quickly pressed the ‘close’ button of the elevator. But Yabu was quick to hold the door with his hand. He entered. There was a long awkward silence in the elevator- until Yabu finally spoke.

“We need to talk Kei. Alone.”

“There’s no need for that, Yabu-san.”

“Yabu-san? Have I really become a stranger to you?”

“You chose to make yourself a stranger.”

“Let’s settle this, once and for all.”

Yuto refused to let Inoo by himself. Thus the tall boy tagged along to the meeting. He alerted Keito, who soon after arrived at the lounge. Keito and Yuto are sitting one table farther from Inoo, observing from afar.

.
.
.
.Takaki raises his right eye brow. “Of course I know. He is meeting Yabu at the lounge.”

Hikaru couldn’t hide his surprise. “And you are okay with it?”

“Unlike you, Kei is transparent. There’s no hidden agenda in his mind. Perhaps if you can learn a little bit about being true to your partner, Yabu will actually pay more attention to you, Hikaru- san,” Takaki mocks.

Hikaru bites his lips. Seem like his plan backfires.

.
.
.
.

“How are you?” Yabu speaks.

“Fine,” Inoo shortly reply.

Yabu leans forward. “Is Ainosuke all right?”

“He finally gets a real father. A father who did not think of him as a burden.”

There is bitterness in Inoo’s statement. Yabu can’t help but feeling guilty.

“I want to meet my son.”

“He is not your son anymore, Yabu-san.”

“Kei please…” Yabu attemps to hold Inoo’s hand but the later boy was quick to withdraw his hands from the table.

“Please don’t call me that. I am Takaki Yuya’s spouse now. Please call me with my new surname.”

“You have changed Kei…”

Inoo finally lifts his face up. His eyes are red, and the boy is glaring fiery at Yabu.

“I did not change Yabu Kota. You did.”

“I miss you Kei. I miss Ainosuke. I miss us.”

Inoo closes his eyes. He gives out a very long exhale. “I think we are done here. Let’s go Yuto- kun.”

Inoo gets up. He was already turned around, about to leave the table when Yabu caught his wrist. Yabu pulls Inoo towards him and hugs Inoo from behind, as he rest his chin on Inoo’s right shoulder.

Yuto and Keito are both shock with what they just witnessed. They wanted to interfere, however they stopped upon seeing Yabu’s tears running down his cheeks.

“I miss you Kei… I do…” Yabu continues to sob. “I regret all the pain I gave you. I’m sorry…”

Inoo keeps his straight face. But in his mind all the good memories they shared begin to rewind itself. Yabu hasn’t changed his perfume- this is the same scent that Yabu wore for the past few years. There is nostalgic feeling in this atmosphere.

Yet, the hug doesn’t make Inoo feels secure anymore. He doesn’t get flustered like he used to. The scar Yabu left in his heart bleeds again.

He can never forgive Yabu.

“You chose Hikaru. You chose to divorce me,” Inoo releases himself from Yabu’s hug. He walks towards Yuto and Keito.

“It is time for us to detach ourselves from each other. I hope you can be happy with your choice, Yabu Kota.”
