Well, simply put, it's history and interactions between different countries shown through cute guys representing said countries. (And some adorable girls too, though they are rarer. =3=)

...But yeah, it seems like people either love the series or think:
1. It's incredibly racist.
2. The fandom is horrible, therefore it too must be horrible.

So... yeah.

And while the series does play on stereotypes a lot and I can understand the whole "it's racist" standpoint, it picks on EVERYONE and most fans adore their country's character.

Unfortunately, it seems the fandom has attracted a lot of... younger, more impulsive fans who don't realize that the characters of this series represent ENTIRE COUNTRIES and therefore REAL PEOPLE but at the same time are not literally the way everyone from that country acts and it's kind of resulted in a lot of... uh... I don't know if "unintentional racism outside of the canon" is the right way to put it, but... *facepalm*

Though I personally love the series. =3=
I would reccommend reading it/watching it without paying attention to the crazed horde. Besides, one episode is five minutes, and Funimation has high quality subs uploaded to YouTube, and the original webcomic is free and available to the public, so it wouldn't be hard just to preview it for yourself~
