False Patriotism is Unpatriotic

Folks are still grumbling about the students wearing flag t-shirts on Cinco de Mayo getting told to go home and change. I know, most people don't know enough about their own culture, let alone Mexican American culture, to know that Cinco de Mayo is not a Mexican holiday, but a Mexican/American holiday. It's a day that celebrates the relationship of Mexicans and Americans because of the assistance given by Americans in the Battle of La Puebla.

Turning it into some sort of anti-immigrant conflict is an act of extreme ignorance and stupidity.

But then, Roger Ebert says it better than I ever could.
