Saw Romeo & Juliet in Korean style today and liked it. It started out a bit artsy, the opening fight scene done as a dance. The supertitles--it was the first time I'd seen a play with them and I found them inadequate. Instead of describing the scene most of the time they described the stage, which I could see perfectly well myself. Otherwise it was quite nice. Kudos in particular to (the actress who played) Lady Montague, a tiny part but she drew your eye with her stoicism. Mercutio was delightful, and his death scene...wow. I mean, it's well-written certainly! but this was an adaptation, and even though I didn't understand a word of it I was still moved by how it went. It turned the play on its heel, going from bouncy and arty to deadly serious. There were lighter moments after it, like R & J in the bedroom, much longer than I remember it in the original, but very comicly done. So there were shifts in emphasis, and the very very end was changed utterly. ( No, Juliet does not wake up in time.) Still, very nice. Got pictures, but I'm in Itaewon seeing whether anything is open to get anything done, and I'm not going to spend more time here than I need to. Here, being the PC방
Will post again tonight, no doubt. Now off to see whether Taco Bell in Seoul is like Taco Bell in California. Weeeee!
