watching the skies

Apr 03, 2009 16:03

My mom asked whether we were going to have to get ready to run, meaning that with all this missile rattling would I have to think about evacuating?  Now my coworker had invited me to an art show this weekend (I may still go, even though she had to back out) and made no mention of it, so I sent her an IM about it.  Okay, so our cubicles face each other--sometimes after a long day the listening/speaking centers are tired.  So I ask, and she stands up and we actually talk about it.  I said "With all this stuff in the news, will I have to watch?"

The look on her face, momentarily, was priceless.  I said, "Oh no, not what I meant!  I mean, will I have to be careful?  Is there anything to worry about?"  She said no, that this sort of nonsense happened sometimes.  Like earthquakes, I thought to myself.  Sure it could be the big one, but just duck under the desk until the shaking stops.  Koreans don't even duck under the desk, so to speak, and unless that thing does something terrifically unplanned I don't expect your average Korean is going to give a damn.  Life will go on, as will shopping and art shows and, if I'm damned lucky, some more trees blooming for my camera.

We laughed at the miscommunication, and I mimed a set of binoculars pointed at the sky 'watching' the missile.  "No, no, I'm not quite that crazy!"

Added on because I don't want to monopolize your f-list.  Thanks/blame to ambersarchives  and her news feeds for reminding me of this.
