This is a rant, something I'll blog elsewhere with much more snark and profanity, but thought I'd share my thoughts here. I've posted this in other threads, but it comes down to this and yes, ALL Mileage May Vary:
I don't give a damn about CANON or frakin' MYTHOS!
- If I wanted to read the Harry Potter books vs. the movies, I would. (Have done neither
( Read more... )
Eh - I'm not an avid watcher of SV. I saw the show in the first couple of seasons and liked the idea of seeing a teenage Clark Kent growing up in Smallville. Then, I stopped, saw the show occasionally and was put off by the primary colors (like, literally). Then, I saw Justin Hartley in season 6 and was like -- wow. Still, even though I think that man is absolutely beautiful, it wasn't enough to come back and watch SV. And I was never truly impressed with their version of Lois Lane...I always thought she was supposed to be smarter than what she's been portrayed as, even as she's gotten older...So - you have a less than intelligent Lois Lane, an uncharismatic Clark, a loyal best friend in Chloe, whom I like, but has been written with some bad character flaws (denial, insecurity and - even though she's all about discovering truth, being loyal, being a martyr...I always think some of the reasons she does those things is because she wants Clark to actually acknowledge her and say 'Good Job, Chloe.' Am I wrong in that?) Lex becomes a typical bad villain b/c the show needs one, and I'm not sure what Lana was doing.
Then, occasionally you see some other DC characters come in for a few cameos and two minutes of Dinah and all the comic geeks (no offense, if anyone is one) get excited because that means Oliver *has* to end up with Dinah just because it was in the comics, even though the comics portray Oliver as a cheater and dead beat dad and Smallville's Oliver isn't like that. But, hey! Dinah was there! Season 8 ends with the poo that is Doomsday.
Fast forward to season nine, and we have emo Oliver, more uncharismatic Clark (and more bad acting by Tom W.), more less-than-intelligent Lois and Chloe in charge of the exposition. Then, we end with Salvation and all the Smallville uber-fans talking about how the fight with Clark and Zod (who HAS GOT TO BE ONE OF THE MOST UNINTERESTING VILLAINS EVER) was 'awesome' and one of the best EVER (according to K-Site). Have their expectations sunk so low?
And Oh - can I just roll my eyes at one poster on that site who claimed that the way Lois found out about Clark's identity was epic and fantastic was because she 'knew' him, it was 'intimate,' Lois put 'two and two together.' Hellloooooo - maybe the reason why she found out was because Oliver told Clark that maybe Lois finally deserved to know his identity. Maybe it was because he either thought he was going to die or be swept up in glowy lights. Either way -- L&C have known each other years, they work together, they're DATING.
So unless:
1) Clark changed his kissing technique
2) switched out his deodorant
3) or he gives off different pheromones when he becomes the blur
OF COURSE she's going to figure it out. Isn't she supposed to be a reporter?? If she couldn't figure that out - then Smallville just made her into the dumbest reporter on the friggin' planet.
In conclusion, SV has more to worry about than aligning mythos. And the reason why I'm not an avid watcher but I can still pick up on its numerous fails.
Sorry LC for the post that just completely went off the rails.

One thing I've said before.. that if the One More Season thing was SV's Kryptonite, then the damn MYTHOS was its BlackK, giving it divergent yet equally ??? personalities that just can't work together or apart. IDK.
But of course, were this show on any other network without the Superman name to trade on, it'd never have lasted this long (or even to S5 IMO). So I do have to give "props" to mythos for that, making the show go on long enough to give us CHLOLLIE!!!!!

never truly impressed with SV version of Lois Lane.. always thought she was supposed to be smarter than what she's been portrayed as, even as she's gotten older
In what was supposed to be a Mythos-defying twist.. but they never made sense of it. You can have her in Smallville but don't have to send her back to high school. Yes she figured out about Oliver and Clark at times, blah blah.. but still get the same mileage on how she's been developed.
an uncharismatic ClarkLack of charisma is the least of his problems IMO. One of the few times I CAN'T argue that he's always been like this.. he at least did have a certain charm the first 3 or 4 seasons... then all downhill. MMV.
Chloe, whom I like, but has been written with some bad character flaws (denial, insecurity and - even though she's all about discovering truth, being loyal, being a martyr. I always think some of the reasons she does those things is because she wants Clark to actually acknowledge her and say 'Good Job, Chloe.' Am I wrong in that?)You are so NOT wrong in that. It's just the writers did that, thinking it fanned the 'shipper flames; plus I saw that more from Clark than her.. all of his condescending "buck up little camper" -er, sidekick. IDK.. Oliver teases about that, but Clark sort of means it????
As to the rest of her character issues, I have pages my dear, pages. Yes she'll sacrifice herself, but it's not about being the martyred hero (her ego) just making the tough decisions when it counts. Leaders and heroes don't always make the right choices, but they do act.. and own up to both their mistakes and successes; that's part of Chloe to me. MMV.
Lex becomes a typical bad villain b/c the show needs one'cause it's not like Lionel wasn't a Magnificent Bastard.. but using his evil ways to protect Clark's secret got him the kitchen pass. MMV.
I'm not sure what Lana was doing.Boring, annoying the crap out of me, per usual.
Then, occasionally you see some other DC characters come in for a few cameos At least even with Dinah, there was some "entertainment" ;-)
S8 ends with the poo that is Doomsday.S8 entire name is "Made of FAIL POO CHARACTER ASSASSINATION" IMO save for a half dozen Chlollie moments. Blech.
More to follow.

The bar is so low, can hardly see it down there, even grading on the SV curve.

The weakness of that finale killed me. ZOD and the whole Kandorian plot, made of lameness. Checkmate at least had a little bite IMO.
NO suspense about Clark ("winning" the cough*epic*cough battle b/c the bad guy slips on a banana peel of his own stupidity; Clark dying, losing powers; Lois' "discovery").. we've been there, seen that, eyerolled the retcons and rehashes, and have the empty Maalox bottles to prove it.
Had to shout out the BOLD.. Clark made little effort to run after Chloe (which I get that whole "quickie goodbye" for Clark and Chloe cause 1) she knows what is happening, gets it and 2) what else is there to say really: "ILY, miss you, will take great care of your DVDs." *shrugs*
But that Oliver had to exposition the L&C epic love, to REALLY push Clark into just saying GOODBYE to his Twu Luv Lois (forget the truth) who DID NOT know what was really going on, that just .. OY!
Bravo for catching so many fails, bring your rants anytime! LOVED!!!!
