First off, let me just say that this is a fine book. An excellent example of Simon R. Green's style of writing. And thats part of the problem. I was midway thru it when I realized that I had read it before. Not the book, but the story. In his Deathstalker series. And the Mom Quest parts of the Nightside series. And even much of Drinking Midnight Wine...
Hero with a mysterious legacy of great power? Check.
Host of intriguing support characters? Check.
Bruin Bear and the Sea Goat? Check.
Evil powers that distract the good guys with lesser evil powers? Check.
Big ass fights between really powerful groups and/or individuals? Check.
Heroic self-sacrifice? Check.
Surprising betrayals and possessed good guys? Check.
Even James Hart's claiming of his legacy is too similar to John Taylor or Owen Deathstalker. Its a pity that I read this book so long after reading Green's various other series. Because its a good story. Its just one he's already told me...
